I am running XP PRO SP2, I have Jarte program to always open the .rtf files. In My Documents the .rtf show with a word pad icon and not the Jarte icon I wish. I have Star Office 8 designated to open the .doc files and the Star Office icon shows on those as well as the Mozilla icon for the html files. How do I get the .rtf files to show with the icon I wish. Or if I want to change the default icon of any file? I have uninstall the Jarte program as well as change the program to open it to another but the word pad icon shows on all. In Tweak UI program I have repaired icons with no avail. Any ideas?

There is no change icon option and notice it say that the rtf file is audio. I meant to add that the file opens in the program I want.

    Hi sureshot,

I see you have a "restore" button in the "details for the file type" info section. Ordinarily this button is labeled "advanced" and when selected leads to a page that allows you to change the icon among other things. What happens if you click the "restore" button?

Got curious enough to download Jarte. The way I changed default icon for rft was, while rtf was still associated with Word, I used the "advanced" button to change the icon to Jarte. I had to browse to the "programs files ">Jarte>Jarte.exe to select the Jarte icon. Applied and okayed.

After confirming all rtf icons were now showing up with the Jarte icon as default. I then changed the rtf default "open with" to Jarte (making sure the "always open with" option was also checked.

The only other comment I would like to make is, "are you sure you aren't going to cause yourself problems down the road "? By this I mean rtf and doc conversions when opened and saved in one program may cause fits when later opened in other word processors. I know nothing about Jarte and plan on an uninstall immediately, I just thought I'd mention it.

Okay...so I have two comments. Have you Virus/malware/addware scanned lately? I'm just a little bothered by how you wound up with a file type of "audio cd" for rtf. I know some exploits of certain critters will do this in order to trick security into allowing an execution of text code ala rtf.

I run Adaware weekly,BOClean is on full time and have CA Associates security suite running and do a full virus scan weekly- all is clear also run MRU-Blaster and Spyware-Blaster and CCleaner. I have uninstalled the Jarte and went back to the default. This all started when I uninstalled the Microsoft Office Pro 2003 that came bundled with my new laptop as a trial. Thanks for your input.

Such as what? The Power Point Viewer stayed behind and I have StarOffice 8 and am wondering what else is needed. Thanks for the comeback.

    Hi Quickshot,
I'm not sure if the suggestion of changing the icon, via the button I mentioned, was used. Do you have the icon you now wish for rtf? I'm also relieved to hear that your critter free. File type "audio CD" just puzzles me a bit. I don't know enough about how this stuff works, at the registry level, to figure that one out. I guess it's not important as long as rtf's open and function as designed.

Yes I figured out how to change the icon now from your previous post. On the "Audio CD" part of it I discovered before I uninstalled the Jarte that when I open Folder Options,File types that "Audio CD" is highlighted and if I scroll down to another file type and highlight it then that was what was in the description box of RTF file type. Very weird to say the least. All is back to normal now if there is a normal,ha.
