   I am tring to change the registered name and the name under documents and settings with out loosing my saved files. when i try to change the folder name it won't because this file is needed to run windows. i have a dell with windows xp

   You can't change the name of the folder (as you found out). You can change your login name from User Accounts in Control Panel, but that will still keep the current name of the users folder.
   
   The only way you can change that is to add a new account with the name you want to use.
