When I open windows explorer the My Documents folder is expanded while all others are not. Is there a way to also have the my documents "closed" when opening windows explorer?

    Certainly is!

Don't know where you are opening Windows Explorer from - I have a shortcut on the Desktop, but if from, say, Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer, Right click on Windows Explorer > Properties and replace under target explorer.exe with explorer.scf.

In fact if you place the cursor at the end of exe and backspace, when exe has been erased a dropdown box will appear with the .scf option.

I assume you are opening Windows Explorer by going to Start/Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer.

If so try right click on Windows Explorer and click Properties. In the target line add to the end of what is there "[space]/n,/e,C:\ ".
Do not use the quote marks. This should cause it to open with drive C expanded. I have not figured out how to get it to open with nothing expanded. Maybe someone else has.

If you are opening it by right clicking on Start and selecting Explore, I do not know how to change the target from there.

I have noticed that mine will open different from these two places. Check yours out and let us know. You may get the opening you want by right clicking on Start and click Explore.

Pete gave you a better solution and simpler than mine. Ignore my way to change the target and use his.
