I have decided to change my computer system over to XP rather than continue with Win98. I feel my system needs to be upgraded as much of the hardware/software is now geared to other than Win98.
    Here are my questions:
Can I switch systems usng the current hard drive by just removing Win98 and loading XP and thereby not reinstalling all the other software.
    OR
Buy a new case with XP already installed with all the necessary components I would like, such as a modem, R/W drive. I do not need a monitor, speakers, keyboard, etc. I assume that this is possible but need advice as to how to go about doing this. Do I just choose based on let's say the company and cost?
Any advice would be helpful at this time.
    Thanks
    Claire

If you have room enough on the C: drive and are upgrading just to upgrade and not to fix problems you can install XP right over the existing.

I am refering to using XP Pro. I do not know if XP home would do this or not.

If you do do this just make sure that any Anti-Virus and Firewall are shut down so that they do not restart on a Windows Restart. Also it is a good idea to set the Video back to standard VGA settings.

Even if you bought a top-of-the-line, state-of-the-art PC 7 years ago, chances are that your hardware isn't sufficient to get the most out of XP. The two considerations you need to judge are budget, and how comfortable you are with doing things yourself.

www.tigerdirect.com offers "barebones" or BTO (built-to-order) systems that you can pick and choose what features you want to buy.

    Two things I would advise:
    1. No matter what, make sure you get a "real" XP cd, not an OEM "recovery" one
    2. Don't skimp on memory. 256 is okay, 512 is better, a full gig will help you get the most out of your computer.

    You asked:
No. Most of your software will need to be reinstalled from the original media if you do an upgrade install (putting XP on top of 98) Your data will probably be okay, but I wouldn't start without doing back ups. I prefer clean installs when at all possible.

    re hardware.

I do not understand you at all on that one. I have never had to reinstall anything after doing an upgrade overtop. Driver update yes. but actuall re-install no.

    re data.
I agree. I have never had a problem there either.

    re backups
    YES, YES, YES,

    Re clean install
    Only as a Last resort.

Also some thing that I forgot.

Do a COMPLETE system Virus and Spyware check before doing an overtop install.

No. If you first remove 98, then install XP, you'll have to re-install all other software.

If you leave Win98 "in place" & do an upgrade, you wouldn't have to re-install your software.

But like others have pointed out, your PC might be "underpowered" to run XP.

If you get a new machine, you can also get XP OEM, which is quite a bit cheaper then the retail version.

Again, like suggested by others, make sure it is a FULL CD, not a "Sytem Restore" type.

Thanks to all of you for answers to my update vs buying new. I don't mind the re-installing of my software. However, I am glad you mentioned whether my system could handle XP as this too was a concern.
So I figure now it is time to start shopping to get what I want.
    Thanks again. Claire
