    Hi,

I want to change the default search engine used when typing words in address bar and making "Enter ".
It is the same used when clicking TOOLS > WEB SEARCH = "NETSCAPE SEARCH - AOL SEARCH" based on GOOGLE but without *CACHED* possibility !
Want to change to GOOGLE but don't want to use "Search bar "...

    TIA.
    Regards.

    [Edit]
Partial solution found... (with help of captjlddavis) :D

To search with GOOGLE when typing words in Address Bar + Enter :
Type about:config in Navigator address bar then edit keyword.URL to change its value to http://www.google.com/search?q=

What's wrong about typing in Search area? You can do what you said, changing the settings, or just have a http://www.google.com/ item in your Personal bookmarks. I am using either Google or ask.com, and so convenient.

    Thanks for answering !
I use only GOOGLE (...and I am very happy with it ! :p ).
The rational way, the simplest, to get it is by typing searched words in "Address Bar" and making "Enter ". :)

Thanks for your kind answer ! :D
You are wrong because you have already helped me... :)

Maybe somebody can help me to solve the second half of my problem :
Making GOOGLE the default search engine used when clicking on TOOLS > WEB SEARCH or when highlighting words and clicking "Search NETSCAPE for ..." in right context menu.

    Regards.

Unfortunately, I can't copy the text I am answering to. Anyway, you say : "rational" and simplest way. Is it really? If there is a Search bar to the right of the Address Bar, it is simpler. And, if the bar has a G at the left, it uses Google. And, there are choices in the dropdown. And, you can use other search engines. I have no clue what is wanted.

    Wlecome to the Forum, vigat!

    vigat,

Clear the Location Bar, and type: about:config

In the "Filter" field type: browser.search.defaultenginename

In the "Value" column it will show "Netscape ". In order to change this to "Google ":

Right click "Netscape ", and select: Modify
    Delete: Netscape
    Type: Google

Exit the window. Now when accessing Tools | Web Search, and highlighting typed words in a web page, the right click context menu will now show:

    search Google for _____.

Let us know if you have any problems.

You do know that Netscape Navigator 9 has been discontinued, and in fact, you should be receiving reminder windows to that effect.

I hope you will download and install Firefox 2.0.0.12, and seriously consider replacing Navigator 9.0.0.6 with Firefox... :)

You are the champion ! :D:D:D

I put one more golden star on your shoulders...
This forum appears as a warm and kind place with quality people.

Your explanations (I suspect you to be teacher in "real" life... ;) ) lead to perfect result.
More : your tweak makes TOOLS > WEB SEARCH opening localized GOOGLE (same foreign country seen when typing words in address bar).

I have tried many (hundreds ?) browsers and all were rapidly uninstalled, staying with IE 6 and its big defects.
I had a bad memory of early Navigators...
Recently, I discovered NAVIGATOR 9.0.0.6 and made a try without "a priori" : what a surprise ! It is stable as a rock on small configuration and more I use it, more I feel confortable, all is as expected.
I use it with "Mouse Gestures 1.5.2" (perfect after tweaking "diagonal tolerance" to 0) and theme "macfoxII ".
I think NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR 9.0.0.6 is worth a try, especially helped with people like you who make it very customisable...

    Ramona, get my deep gratitude.
    Regards.

You may not get reminder windows about the fact that Navigator9.0.0.6 is, no longer, being supported, i.e. no further development. But, you should have a red exclamation point in the Status Toolbar. Clicking on that, will treat as if Firefox or Flock are updates to 9.0.0.6. They are not, and, for now Navigator9.0.0.6 is as secure as the other two browsers. Some people find that certain features of Navig.9.0.0.6 are better than Firefox or Flock. One case is the Tabb browsing. I. have run into problems, with Navig.9.0.0.6, and, found it easily replaceable, for this reason.
And, Navig.9.0.0.6 is derived from Firefox, and, mostly as customizable.

    Thanks Westside !
At the moment, there is no reminder anywhere...
Perhaps because updates are disabled ?
I use NAVIGATOR 9.0.0.6 with WIN98 SE (one of all times best OS...) and they fly like a rocket on my small configuration.

    Regards.

There was no reminder in Navigator9.0.0.5, and earlier ones, but it has been in Nav.9.0.0.6. I may things upside down, but the Status Bar is above the Start/Quick Launch/Task bar. The warning is in the form of a button, of sorts, which is an exclamation point in red. In addition, there should be in Tools|Options|Add-ons a Netscape Migrator add-on, which allows one to migrate the Navig.9 settings to Firefox or Flock. This capability does not exist if you set up Firefox or Flock first. I don't want automatic updates of any kind. My set up says to ask me what I want to do.
And, there is no reminder, just a "hint ", should I say.
Since I came to Navig.9.x from Firefox, I could care less about importing its settings. I have been there for quite a while. This "hint" is for the benefit of fanatics who must have their old settings.
Anyway, everyone does things differently, and my Searches are not guided by highlighting any kind of text. May be it is inefficient to ask just one question, but I had no idea what you were trying to do. But, I see now, but, still fail to see any benefit to it. But, there is no reason to elaborate. It is a personal preference.
