For years, my Adobe Reader and my browser be it Firefox, Waterfox or IE would download a PDF file and immediately open it in Adobe Reader. Now for some odd reason, the file saves as with a CGI extension and I have to manually find the file and change to PDF before Adobe Reader will open. WHY? and how do I eliminate this step?

Before you open it up, save it as a PDF file. Then open it up. See if this helps the next time you get a PDF file.

Save As (something that pertains to it that makes it easy).pdf

I'll wager that this issue applies to specific sites and not all pdf downloads. This is because many sites generate the pdf file using server side CGI scripts, such as most secure sites or banking sites.

Sites that host an actual (not generated on-the-fly) PDF file should open with no problems.
    Test my theory here:

One possible solution is to update Adobe Reader to the latest version.

Another solution is to right click the PDF link and select Save target as... or Save link as... and change <file name>.cgi to <file name>.pdf.

The other issue is that your computer may have a program associated with the CGI extension. There should be no program in Windows associated with CGI files. In fact, the CGI extension should not even be in the list of file types.
