Just recently my 2 CDROMs weren't recognized. So I shutdown, pushed the IDE and power cables in, they didn't go anymore. So I restarted it, and all was well. When I got home from school, I had a message telling me they were unplugged. My top one, CD-R, was spinning madly, and was HOT. My bottom CDROM was spinning, and I could open it, but not the CD-R. What's going on??

I would go into device manager and remove the drivers for both. Then reboot and let windows reinstall the drivers. They do become corrupt at times and this will check that out.
Let us know how things go. Also you can unplug and replug a cpoulpe times to clean the contacts. Have had that to help.

It's always worth cleaning the lens with a lens-cleaning CD first. If you don't have one already they're cheaply available in music or hi-fi stores.

i cant see them in device manager. theyve been unplugged for a while. i left the ide cables in cuz they were a pain to get out, and the other day it started reading the cd in there, and there was no power to the cdrom

could it be the jumpers? it always did take a few secs longer after i put the burner in.

Got a extra ribbon laying around, I'd try it. Also look for bent pins on both ends. But, I suspect the ribbon myself.
