I am using XP. I use CDMA modem to connect to net which as usb connectivity. When I remove it from computer, on again plugging in it requires Reboot. Otherwise it does not get detected. But in win98 i can any time plug in it or plug out it.. Win98 does not show the problem of not detection.

If usb don't require reboot then why in WinXP i have to reboot the machine to get it detected. Is there any way in XP so that i don't have to reboot in order to get modem detected.?

I don't have a USB modem but go into the properties of the modem, in Device Manager if there is a power saving feature in the properties turn that off. Also you could try scanning for hardware changes in Device Manager. That used to work for me, when I would forget to turn my external modem on, before I booted my machine.

    I have tried that!
Your suggestion actually did a good job sometimes but its not working now!! The power saving feature for the modem was already unselected!!

Can any one tell me if USB does not require reboot then why i have to boot again again!!!>..

The error always is that port can't be opened!!

but when i tried to query the modem through the control panel " the messege was it is ok." I mean i can still query the modem successfully but can't connect to internet unless I reboot the machine.

Look in Event Viewer. Maybe there is an error to give you a clue. There could be something in Services that has been changed . There might be a driver upgrade for your modem? I'm just grasping at straws here. Get ahold of the manufacturer, this might be a known bug.

The drivers I am using are the latest!

Actually i have came this point that every time when i remove the modem from computer it thinks that is still there and when i reconect the modem to computer it again think that the modem is already there and on connecting this one it creates confusion and says the port is busy.

In brief on removing and reconnecting the computer thinks that an another device is using the port (ie. when i first connected the modem) so it does not allow modem to use that port. (on again connecting it may thinks that another device trying to use the same port).

I f u understand what the problem is then please tell me solution!

    Try this
    uninstalling phantom network cards

I would start from scratch with the XP "“ ICS machine.

Go to the Device Manager and uninstall both Network Interface Cards.
    Close the Device Manager.

Next open a command-prompt and enter the following commands, pressing enter after each command:

    set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

    start devmgmt.msc

The first command allows Device Manager to show phantom devices. The second command launches Device Manager. From the Device Manager's menu, select View, Show hidden devices. Expand the Network Adapter tree, and delete the old adapters.

Close the Device Manager and reboot your system to reinstall both of your adapters

Or go to this thread and download hiddendev.zip http://www.bitbenderforums.com/vb22/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54460

Also if you boot to safe mode the extra devices might show up there. Delete all and then try to reinstall
