I am installing a new CD-RW into our dinosaurs at work and the unit works fine except for the lack of any audio output. I have the unit cabled to the SB card (which did have the extra plug for it). The original CD-ROM still works and sounds fine.

Not sure how to troubleshoot this. Assuming the cable is ok (new) then it would be either the new CD-RW or the sound card, right? Assuming again, that the new unit is ok, do I have to do something to activate the 2nd input plug on the card? I can't find any Creative software on the Programs List (Win 98SE) but the Device Mgr does indicated Creative programs at work in the Sound section.

    Lost, Lar

Check in the sound control applet and make sure the auxillary isn't muted. Don't know what kind of SB card you have but with SB live, one connector is for cd audio and the other is the auxillary.

Hi Zander, that is kind of what I figured. I mentioned the lack of an SB program (sound control applet). I may to find find one somewhere! You are right, first determine which card I have.

    I'll be back.

Click on start\run and type in sndvol32.exe. This should open it for you. If you want access to it in the system tray, open the control panel and then multimedia. On the audio tab check the box next to the line that says show volume control on the taskbar. You can then just double click on the speaker icon in the tray and it will open it for you.

The Volume Control panel is there (SB 16 Mixer) but there is no accomodation for activating or controlling the AUX connector. It is not even listed on the check-off menu to choose which functions you want in the Vol panel.

Is there another applet that should be there with which to do this?

    Thanks, Lar

As an additional note, I found the original disc and installation manual. I reinstalled it with the aim of making sure that everything was installed. No change. The manual talks about the mixer not having AUX but the Volume Control does... .but it does not in reality.

I looked through the Device Mgr, Mulitimeda section, clicked on all exe programs in the Creativ/CTSND/program folder in Program Files. Zip.

Hope that this info provides a little more insight.

You may want to take a look around in HERE, and also select Support from the Menu for more info. :)

I just double clicked the Speaker in Systray and it brought up the SB audio mixer panel.

Selecting Options/Properties all of the various items were there.

About 9 different things including Aux.

Guess I can't be of much help here. I'm not familiar with the SB 16 cards at all. I did manage to find a couple of manuals in pdf format (one for sb16 pci and one for sb16 pnp). There were some differences between the two but from what you said about your manual they seem to be pretty much the same. They show the auxillary connector but no mention of them in the sound control (unless I missed it). Can't help but think you're overlooking something as there has to be something there to control it. If you want to take a look at the manuals I found you can find them here . Sorry I can't be of more help. Perhaps somebody that has the same card will see this and be able to help.

Zander, I can't thank you enough for your thoughts. The manual is lacking on info on Aux. I have sent an email support request to Creative on this. We'll see. I'll report back what I find out.

Well, this took a turn that I did not expect. The jack on the board that I used was not an AUX jack, it is some weird SPDG jack (or something like that). There is no AUX jack and that's that. But it looks exactly like the AUX jack would look and is located adjacent to the CD-ROM AUDIO jack.

Thanks for all of your input and sorry for the stupidity.

Sending this message was not easy but I strongly believe in closing a thread.

Most likely a SPDIF (Sony Phillips Digital Interface Format) input. You could use it if either of the cdroms have an SPDIF output. You might double check to see. However, it's been my experience that most don't.

Thanks for the enlightenment. No such output jack on the CD-RW.

I will be back another time, to be sure.
