I have recently installed a Phillips EIDE CD-RW onto a friend's Compaq. This system uses w2k. When she performs a restart, the cd-rw drops out. The device is not assigned a drive letter in Explorer, and cannot be accessed for either data or music. When she does a cold boot, the drive comes back.

I have no idea whether or not she has installed SP1 or SP2. The only thing I know about this machine is that it is leased, and had Windows pre-installed.

What's going on, and how can I fix this problem?

Did you set the jumpers correctly for the master/slave?

Yes, I did. The original drive (a standard CD-ROM drive) had the jumper set to Cable Select. I thought only Dell did this, so I was a little surprised. That's the way I configured the burner when I installed it. I'll see if the HDD is set that way, and if it's set to Master then change the CDRW to Slave.

Any other hints? She's heard of other people having this problem, she tells me this morning.

We just discovered the same problem on several HP Vectra 400 PCs w/ HP DVD/RW drives. At this point, we are not sure of the cause, but drive letter disappears from 'my computer ' after a period of time. It is there on boot up, but students report it is missing after a while.
