I have XP-Pro and something is turning off the CD's write flag. It happens often enough to drive me crazy but not often enough for me to remember where to turn the thing back on (I know I should save it some where but each time I think it will be the last). The real question for the experts here is how do I find out what/why it keeps getting turned off. TIA.

Are you maybe trying to say that some times you can burn cd's and other times you can't?

Thanks for the reply and the answer is, sort of. I can burn CDs after I've gotten the recording tab to show up and re-enabled writing. I THINK, after I use Nero to burn CDs, it does something that turns that off again. However, that might just be coincidence.

At this point I am unable to burn using the built-in Windows burning but I think I can burn using Nero (I haven't really had the chance to try it yet). I have thus far been unable to get the silly thing back on.

There is probably a conflict between Nero and the built in burning engine in XP - the general recommendation is to turn off the native burning ability on the drive. Right click on the burner in My Computer > Properties > Recording tab and uncheck the box 'Enable ....'

By default the native burning is turned off by Nero when installed AFAIK and ideally should stay that way.

My advice - use Nero exclusively.

BTW - I have never tried to use the XP burner, with or without Nero as I have always used Nero from way back.

Thanks for the reply but if that is all it was, I wouldn't be complaining. As I posted originally, the recording tab is missing. That is what I meant when I used the term "turned off ".

Perhaps Nero turns off the IMAPI CD Burning service. To check this, click start>run and type services.msc. Find IMAPI COM CD Burning Service in the list and check to see if it's disabled. If so, double click on it and where it says startup type, change it to automatic. Then, either reboot or you can start it immediately by clicking the start link in the left pane in the window. Either click that link or restart the computer and then see if you can burn a cd.
