I'm running a compaq presario, WIN ME with Adaptec easy cd creator pre-installed.. its about three years old. i used to never have a problem buring cds, until recently... now all of a sudden i think my CD-RW drive isn't working.

for one, when i insert blank cds (straight from the package) and try to burn it pops right back out and tells me to insert a disk with sufficient space

i've tried three diff brands of cds and none of them work, and im sure at least two of them worked before

when i insert a blank cd, the drive properties reads the CD as all used and no free space.. i don't know if this is normal or if its supposed to read as empty.

i've tried removing it from the device manager and it finds it again, says its working properly.. but doesnt seem to be. is the only other answer to assume the drive needs to be replaced?

    -thanks

Have you checked for updated drivers for your CDRW?

I recently discarded a writer with the same problem. It trashed a couple of new cd-r's before I figured it out.

I might suspect Easy CD Creator. Could see if those (full?) disks can be burnt by another machine or, better still, set the CD-RW up on another machine (will be a confirmation at least).

Edit: Could test CD Creator by running a simple burning program.

Because the burning programme (Roxio, nee Adaptec) was preinstalled 3 years ago, I would suggest uninstalling it and reinstall again. Download any updates for your version from roxio.com and update it as well. Whilst hardware faults do develop, it's more likely to be a software fault either with the programme or with the windows install.

    Update is....

Turned out to be my drive. My roxio was un/reinstalled with complete updates for the program and no further drive updates were available for the CDRW drive...

$50 well spent to replace it considering my new drive writes up to 52x where as my old one went to 8. :)

    thank for the help though!!
