I recently had to run system recovery because of some random corruption on my main system files, but when I tried to recover the system it didn't seem to work properly, so i decided to reinstall xp, therein lies my problem, because seemed to have a problem with the adapti drivers and doesn't want to recognise both my Teac cd/rw or my pioneer dvd rom.
I've tried teac website for drivers but there doesn't seem to be anything to do with this particular problem. It's annoying because I can't install drivers for some of my hardware, but have enough to get on the web.
Any help would be gratefully received.

    Cheers

Have you (with the XP disc in the drive) scanned for missing/over written files?
Start/Run sfc /scannow (note space between sfc and /)

If you have SP2 installed and haven't an SP2 slipstreamed install disc, then you will need to run SP2 over the top after the sfc /scannow restore has finished.

The problem is that I can't use my cd drive because according to windows, it isn't there, but it is spinning up during boot up, so I can't scan and over right problems if it needs the xp & service pack 1 disc. I have installed service pack 2 before I reinstalled xp pro.

Would it be a case that I would need to get drivers or a patch of some kind?

I remember the computer telling me about atapi drivers not being recognised or not there to install, but that seems odd as I have installed with this xp disc before and had no problems.

If you reinstalled XP SP1 over the top, you will need to reinstall SP2. So you can see the benefits of slipstreaning with the original XP install disk.

This sites moderator Arie has posted some instructions. There are others available, but his works fine and is straight forward in its instructions.

Now back to your problem... Have you uninstalled (deleted) the offending CD drive from the device manager, rebooted and let windows redetect and install it?

If you set your BIOS to boot first from the CD, and reboot with the XP disc does the drive work OK? If it doesn't, this could indicate a hardware failure.

If it does, then it's likely to be a software issue, and after removing it from the device manager and reinstalling, I'm at a loss. Drivers for most (all?) CD drives should be native in the OS, unless you have some obscure non standard drive.

Unplug and reseat both ends of the data cable from the CD to the motherboard after removing it from the device manager before powering up again.
