Do you need all three cd roms for your computer to work that is do you need a CDR RW and a CD Rom and a CDDDVD Rom. I just build a computer put a new CD Rom and a CDR RW and now want a CD DVD. So will I still need the CD Rom? I mean to so that I can run games and play music etc.

Not really, sub the cdrom for the dvd as the dvd will play most anything. Now place the cd-rw on the secondary ide cable as Master & the dvd as slave on the primary ide channel...make sure DMA is set in devicemanager for both drives if you can:)

This is a new computer and a CD Rom was already bought for it but now I have gotten the DVD Rom I find that Ican`t install it as the motherboard is blocking the entrance for the third CD Rom. I took out the CD Rom and installed the DVD Rom so now am I doing any harm on using the DV Rom for everything. The other one is the CDRW. I regret that I didn`t notice that I wouldn`t be able to install all three before I bought it. Anyhow just would like to know if it will harm the DVD Rom by using it for everything??

maryelle, some cases just will not let us grow as big as we want, eh? Mine too, darn it. You will be fine using the dvdcdrom for most everything. After all they are least expensive compared to the burner! Make sure now that the burner is master on the secondary ide ribbon & the dvd player slave to primary ide, then check in devicemanager to see if dma is enabled.......Rancher

 Hey Rancher, does your advice on primary/slave setup for cd burner apply when running cd-r/rw, cd, 2 HDs, C & D? Should burner be primary on IDE 2 and HD D be slave on same channel? The rest of the setup, drive C primary on IDE channel 1 and cd on as slave??

I got software reporting hardware failure on Sony CD burner when writing to CDR media, but working flawlessly when writing to CDRW media.

Current setup is Drive C primary and Drive D slave on channel 1, CDRW primary and CD slave on channel 2. Think I should try change and see what happens?

You have BOTH cdrom & cd-rw on same channel. Not good if you burn on the fly from cdrom to burner on same channel. Can you get firmware update for your sony? This helps with diff blanks that continue to enter the market. C primary on IDE channel 1 and cd on as slave. Rancher:)

I think I have it right now. I have the harddrive setup as master which is c drive and I have the DVD Rom as slave with it this is on the primary IDE. The CDRW is on secondary IDE slot alone. I take it this is how its supposed to be?

:( Hey Rancher, I can't even get Sony support site to open, let alone look for firmware. Will keep trying. Got to break down machine to put 56K modem back in, got dsl, took modem out, now can't fax. Will switch drives around, C as master, CDRW slave channel 1, D master, CD slave, channel 2???

    Sony Balony

Bummer on Sony, is yours OEM? I here these can't be ******* with anyway. Mine is Liteon, cheapest out there 24X ($78) & does have firmware upgrades.
Yeah you can run everything as you stated ok, I like to burn on the "fly" from 50X cdrom slaved on ide 1 but your config is good too. Rancher

Hey Rancher: Just been so busy, haven't had a chance to try Sony again, will as soon as I finish this. When you record on the fly to CDRW as slave on channel 1, where is your CD player? Slave or master on channel 2? Now I'll see if I can get Sony to answer their phone. Later:confused:

    primary/secondary

martinr121 , either way there on IDE 2. I would place the the cdrom as the master on IDE 2, reasso?, Get the most speed ya can for on the fly to burner. To confuse you even more:confused:
You could place the burner slaved to IDE 1 if your other hard drive & cdrom are on IDE 2 & this is where you will have you "SOURCE" files to burn to "DESTINATION" Main thing is you just can't supply the files TOO fast for the burner:cool:

OK Rancher, at the risk of beating this subject to death, here goes.

IDE1: C drive master, CDRW slave,
IDE2: D drive master, CD slave,
Now, if I can just remember this until tomorrow when I take the machine apart.

Sony answered the phone, no firmware, update for software, B's Recorder Gold, came with their drive, retail purchase. I was using HP Software and Easy CD Creator 5 for HP CDRW drive that went
to my son with old IBM. Liked it a lot better, think I'll pirate it back.
