We have an IBM PC PC300PL with one LG CD-ROM 8400B and a HP 9100 CD-RW, and we had upgraded the operating system to windows XP professional. We used the LG CD-ROM to perform the setup and it worked nicely. After we ended and tried to use the computer, we noticed that the LG CD-ROM drive was not accessible and was not listed in the hardware manager, then we performed a new hardware detection and it was found, but, everytime we start windows we have to do a detection. Does anyone knows how to fix this ?

My best guess would be a hardware compatibility issue of some sort. Possibly the device and possibly the bios version.

I ran into the same thing with another brand of PC. I had identical perif. hardware in two PCs. One had a motherboard failure and I replaced mobo, case, cpu, etc. XP Pro did fine with all the drives and such. The other machine is having the same sort of failures. Services I have to activate each time. Hardware install failures (such as complete refusal to allow me to try to install a printer, any printer).

I could try to update my bios and such but since this is personal - at home, I'm just getting a new case/mobo/cpu for the machine.

I briefly checked the web and the IBM site for details about issues with your particular system (since I have them at work as well and may need to do XP one day) and didn't find anything. Maybe just missed it though.

My suggestion would be for you to go to http://www.ibm.com/support/ and look around. If you don't have any better luck than I did, email tech support and they can probably help.

I had tried it indeed, and sent an e-mail to them, but IBM only supports the original operating system. I looked at LG service too, they have a firmware correction, but do not advise to use with OEM drives like IBM.

    Thanks anyway.

Ouch. Sounds like you may be stuck.

I do think that if you have a number of machines that won't work right and you want to stay with XP I would try the various upgrades to firmware on a test box though and see how it works.

They may "not recommend" just because they haven't tested it or don't want to support it and not because of any known problems.
