I'm going to wait before I take my harddrive out to install windows. I'm so close right now. My new hard drive is fdisked and formated. The a: drive works . The C: drive is my hard drive. D: drive is my ram drive. My cd-rom drive has been recognized and the driver was installed. The only problem it seems is that I don't have a drive letter for my cd-rom drive. I tried all the letters thru Z. Any Ideas? When I booted up the computer the cd-rom drive lite up for a few seconds which it didn't before. cah

Why do you keep starting new a thread when it is still the same problem. Anyone that is not aware of the other threads may not know what you have or have not done and start adding un-necessary items all over again.

Unless I have forgotten all that was previously discussed in the other thread you are using a 2.5 gig HD divided into two partitions.

If so, did you format BOTH partitons. ( C & D ) and set C: as the active partition ?

If there are indeed two partitions on the HD you would have C: & D: E: would be the RamDrive and the CDROM would be F:

BTW. ARE the BIOS and jumpers set correctly on the devices ? If not then nothing may work correctly.

I have a new hard drive 2.5gb installed with only one partition it is recognized in the bios and it shows 2,555,665,178 bytes free. My cd-rom drive is also recognized. It showed the following " CD-ROM device, 1 drive detected,Unit 0,Master,IRQ ADRESS,0x0170" my last drive is "M" I checked all the letters available for the cd-rom drive to no avail. My setting are all set according to the motherboard manual and the c-rom manual. I used the second Ide socket for the cd-rom drive and installed a second IDE cable. I checked the card settings and the cd-rom jumpers. When I boot up everything goes just fine .Then it saids Please insert Windows 98 startup disk. which I did. The cd-rom drive lite lights up and goes off. I get a message "Label not found" and then the A;\> returns.

All I see now is a SKREWED up Startup disk.

Then it saids Please insert Windows 98 startup disk. which I did. .

What in the world is that all about. Isn't the SUD already in ? Are you trying to boot from the HD ?

The cd-rom drive lite lights up and goes off. I get a message "Label not found" and then the A;\> returns

That message is coming from the startup disk. Unless for some unknown reason you have the Config.sys and autoexec.bat from the SUD on the HD. Which I will says right here and now IS BAD for business. The 98 SUD is not meant for or designed to be run from the HD.

A Label is like this ( which is on the SUD )

    :ERROR
    IF EXIST ebd.cab GOTO EXT
echo Please insert Windows 98 Startup Disk 2
    echo.
    pause
    GOTO ERROR

    :ERROR is the lablel.

And there are several of them on the SUD. Each one followed by various commands.

Right now my bottom line is that you have a PI** Poor, Improperly created ( OR MODIFIED ) windows 98 Startup disk.

OR. It was created on a NO GOOD floppy to begin with. Which is possible.

OR, The win98 that the disk was made from is messed up. That is possible also.

Other than the above I am 100% fresh out of ideas.

Hi again, I threw my win98 sud away and took a new floppy out of the box and started all over. The first time I booted It recognized all the drives C: hard drive,D:V. Ramdrive and E: cd-rom drive. So I loaded windows 3 times each time formating first. It takes about 1 hour to load win98, but each time when I get down to the las t 10 minutes after it loads files it hangs up. I checked the C: drive dir. and this is what I have.

Files loaded into the C: harddrive.
    Command.COM 98,000
    Frunlog.txt 1,089
    config.sys 0
    Msdos --- 22
    Netlog.txt 3,704
    Program~1 (DIR)
    Scandisk.log 903
    Setuplog.Txt 95,038
    Windows (DIR)

    7 file(s) 194,636 bytes
    2 dir(s)
    2,389,602,304 bytes free

When I start it up it just hangs at the Windows98 LOGO however I can get to safe mode,But the V ramdrive is still there. I'm keep getting closer

    YYIIIPPPPEEEEE !!!!
    FINALLY some GOOD news

Now You and me both will need a little help.

It looks like there may be a hardware conflict.

Me, Myself and I would suggest removing all plug in cards except the Video and see if Windows behaves itself.

Then re-install the cards ONE AT A TIME

That is all I can think to do right now.

OOPSS !!! Hold on a bit. Another Wild idea just lit up.

If one does in fact exist pull the modem out. Quite often they will cause conflicts ( IRQ ) for both Windows install and/or Sound Cards which may in turn be the install problem.

    I just looked again and saw this;
But the V ramdrive is still there. I'm keep getting closer

I have no idea why the RamDrive is still there. I do not think it should be. As there is nothing in the config.sys to create it.

    config.sys shows 0 ( zero ) in list.

Are you sure you are not looking at the VM ( virtual memory ) alias Swap file ?

In My computer you should olny have C: and D: C: being the HD and D: bieng the CDROM.

    Good luck
    BillyBob

After you remove the sound and modem, format c: again and start totally fresh. Sounds like a conflict or a Bios setting that Windows cannot handle. Hence the reason you can boot into Safe Mode. It's always a good procedure, to me, to NOT have any add in cards installed when doing a fresh install of Windows. Then install one card and its drivers at a time.
    Congrats on getting this far!!!

Make sure the SUD is out of the Floppy drive before Windows get to the first restart.

You may or may not get an error message refering to it during the install. If you do just but it back in temporarily and then remove it as soon as the light on the floppy goes out.

You say it get close to the end of the windows install then locks.

I like BillyBobs idea about removing all extra cards except video and maybe disk controller if its not on MBD.

ALSO when it locks... The M$ approved method states: never press reset during an install, if a lockup occurs, completely power off the system for a full minute, then reboot without any media in the drives, the install should continue.

:) And a deffinte challange it was :)

Good luck with your canning and enjoy it next winter.

In my youger days I used to help do A LOT of canning.

:D Now I let Shop Rite do it. :D No room for a garden anymore anyway.

    You are welcome.

I am glad to read that the machine is indeed up and running and back among the more useful tools again.

And yes, it does make a very good machine for the Grand kids.

I also have one just for that purpose.

off point but can a UK memebr ask what "canning" is?

Sounds like a euphemism at first read but I'm guessing its something more normal than that...:)

Canning is when at harvest time you take the fruit of your labors and try to save them in sealed jars. Such as Tomatoes, Beans, Hotpeppers and etc. It's not cost effective, but you know that their isn't any preservatives or chemicals in the food. Also the food tastes better when you grow it yourself. Thats canning.:D

Why Certainly a UK member can ask..

And I will do my best to give you my interpetation of same.

" Canning " Is when we raise fruits and vegatables and then harvest them, prepare them and place in ( what I know as JARS back in them days ). Thereby preserving them for use during the Winter.

When you go to the store and look at all these containers containing such things as Campbells Soups, Fruits and Vegatbles in tin cans, Pickles in glass jars, we here refer to these things as being CANNED.

If cah1935 and I are referring to the same thing ( hopefully we are ) He is invloved in a lot of time consumming, tedious hard work.

Like getting Peas out of the Pods. Snipping the ends off of String Beans, Cleaning Carrots and all kinds of other items prepairing them for CANNING.

Now let me say this and If cah1935 and I are refering to the same thing. If it is not done properly ALL time is wasted.

Hey cah1935 If we are talking of the same thing, the item that I dis-liked the most was Beets. Nasty, stain everything they contacted job.

So here is hoping that cah1935 and I are on the same track going in the same direction.

There's an old gardening adage: You grow it to eat; you eat what you can; what you can't eat you can.

I hope that clears it up for you AndyO. :D

I'm thinking the install problem must have been the modem causing an IRQ conflict but can't be sure.
