My machine has two CD drives: Drive G: is a Creative 52X mod. CD5233E, and Drive H: is a Yamaha 20-10-40 burner.

Drive G: has quit detecting the presence of a CD disk. The drive reads fine when not in Win2k, such as when booting from a CD in the drive (for instance starting Norton System Works from the CD), but when in Win2k the system cannot tell that the drive has a CD in it.

The Creative Disk Detector (v 1.53) has an icon running in the tray which shows it
knows about both the drives. When I try to get to the Properties, or try to run the Control Panel applet, "Disk Detector ", I get the message, "An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file C:\WINNT\System32\ctdetect.cpl ".

Replacing the module from another machine did not help.

Luckily, the Yamaha drive is working - disks are detected and auto start works OK.

My sound card is a Creative SoundBlaster PCI512. This probably was the source of the Disk Detector software initially. I can't find it on the Win2k CD.

What's the recovery? Remove the drive and reinstall it. Or reinstall the SoundBlaster software? Anyone got any ideas?

I have disabled C/D/D, I also had one or two problems, although I run 98se.
    There is some info here:

I haven't needed it, especially to run at startup, but I have an icon (in Control Panel) in case I want to try using it.
