I have a problem with my CD/DVD not reading anything but game CD's. Is there a setting or something somewhere that I need to check/change? Thanks.

    Please clarify/expand ....

The drive reads CD's, but not DVD's ?

It won't read music CD's, burned program CD's or DVD's. But if I put in a Cd with a game on it it will read it.

Very strange - remove/uninstall the drive in Device Manager and reboot to allow Windows to redetect it.

I tried it and it didn't work. The analyze/troubleshoot says that the drive is working properly. The driver update says that it is the latest available. I don't think it's mechanical because it reads CD ROM like games and software. Any other ideas?

You may have a codec problem - if you load a music CD can you see the contents in Windows Explorer and if you double click on one of the files does it play?

    Little confused here ....

It doesn't read the CD at all. It won't show that there's any files on the CD or anyhting. The only thing it will read is PC gaming software.

Are these purchased or copied music CD's ? - this is baffling.

Copied. Truth be told the machine with the problem is my neighbors. The CD's that I'm using play fine on my machine and in the car. I can't figure it out either. Yopu mentioned a codec problem. Penny for your thoughts.

The CD's that play OK on your computer are the same or from the same source, i.e burnt on the same computer, as your neighbor's?

Do original (not copied) music, etc CD's play on your neighbor's computer OK?

If so it is not unknown for discs burnt on one make of burner or one make of disc to be unreadable on another computer.

Are the games CD's original or copies?

As no files are shown when the CD is opened in Windows Explorer it is not a codec problem - the visibility of the disk contents in Explorer is dependant on the ability of the drive to read the disk - codec problems may arise at the playing stage.

Okay. It was able to read and play music CD's bought from the store but won't read copied music. It also won't burn music. It also won't detect or play DVD's bought from the store or copied DVD's. Very frustrating.

I am leaning towards the conclusion that the drive is faulty .....
DVD-ROM drives have either 2 lasers or a dual wavelength laser - one for CD's, the other for DVD's - necessary because of the packing density of the data - only ~700 Mb on a CD, 4 Gb + on a DVD on disks of physically the same size. Looks like the DVD laser has failed.
I covered that in an earlier post.
That is surprising if it will burn data CD's - music is only data. Will it burn data CD's?

It won't recognize a blank disk period. They have an HP Slimline and those things are almost impossible to work on. I would suggest replacing the drive but everything is so cramped I don't think I could do it and I know they can't.

    Consider an external USB drive?

That's definitely an option to consider.
