    Howdy all,

Hmm, something has happened to my cd/dvds, they are no longer listed on my
system. Put a pause in the autoexec.bat file and @ bootup the dos system
shows they are there, but after WIN98 loads they are not there ? They do not
show in the device manager and although the Hard disk controllers show:

    Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
    Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
SiS 5513 Duel PCI IDE Controller

    Where to look from here
Thanks Steve. but got this additional info

    Shut pc down.
Upplug drives and boot back up.
Shut down again and plug drives back in.

    Maybe windows will re-detect it/them.

    Which OS are you using?

The problem is no appearing to be in the hardware, but in the setup or
the config. It changes almost everytime the system boots.. Sometimes
no CD's sometimes 1 and sometimes both are there ? Have some programs
or Hkeys or something that changes the bootup tables, been fighting
with the little piece of **** PTSNOOP.exe keeps getting loaded in the
register keys as well as something named 18e3a960-7dfe-11db-b9c9-000795aa20fdgets into the RUNONCE- key

But thanks for the other suggestions
    Michael

Loose IDE cables? Loose power supply to the CD?

I am pretty sure that it got installed on my machine when I installed modem drivers. PCTEL modems use it for some, unknown to me, purpose.
If you have the 'strings' program, you can see that it comes from PCtel.

Re the CD/DVD ...Right click on 'my computer' > Device manager then CDrom and remove anything you find there.
Re-boot the computer and let it discover them again. Alternatively you can go into regedit and remove them from the hardware configuration. I would bet that either the configuration is duplicated several times, as in you have more CD/DVD devices than hardware to match.
I had Explorer fail to show the devices intermittently, but not very often. Must be that digital rights act stuff where Microsoft had gotten in bed with MPAA and RIAA and won't let you play your own dang CD's and DVD's that you own.
