Working on a friend's HP Notebook (HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook, 64bit, i3) and the DVD drive doesn't read a CD or DVD. In Computer, it show it as Drive Q. In the Device Manager, the CD-ROM has a yellow triangle. When I right click and go to Properties-General-Device Status, I get this message
Driver update indicates the driver is up to date. I have uninstalled the device a couple of times and rebooted but it didn't seem to help. When I right click on the Local Disk Q and go to properties, the top entry is CD-ROM Drive with a yellow triangle on it. The bottom entry is Hitachi HTS5475564A93E84. I ran the Microsoft Fixit tool and it didn't do any good. Any ideas?

Hi Robert, Have you been to HP for the Optical drivers?
Do you have the OS DVD or has it got the Recovery section on the HDD?
When I upgraded from W8.1 to W10, my HP printer was working fine before and after as far as I could tell, but W10 asked me to insert the HP disc that came with the printer as it needed to finalize the software.
This only took about a minute to complete once the disc was inserted. I'm thinking that the original OS driver may be corrupted and that is why I would try HP for the drivers.
HP can install their Detect and Install software program to do it automatically. Neil.

    Neal,

This is a new area for me to venture into so I am a bit apprehensive. The discs are not available but I was able to open the Recovery Manager. However, I couldn't find any of the 12 listed drivers that appeared to be specific to the CD/DVD drive. I did find drivers for Realtek Card Reader and Realtek Local Area Network (LAN) Driver.

Didn't find any of the 20 listed applications that related specifically to the CD/DVD drive. There were also 11 HP Updates listed that included one for the Realtek Card Reader. Am I getting off track?

Dr - Went to the link you provided and followed the first three steps:
    • Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter
    • CD/DVD Fixit Troubleshooter
    • Manually Fix Corrupted Registry

The first two failed and on the manual registry try, some of the options weren't as described so I couldn't complete it. So I could describe what had happened in the first two, I ran through them again and it appears the Hardware and Device Troubleshooter fixed it on the second attempt. Thanks and I will mark this one "Resolved ".
