In Start Menu>Computer, right click the optical drive and in the menu that opens, left click Eject.

If it still won't open, it's probably a mechanical issue either with the button or the drawer mechanism.

If you need to get it open to retrieve a disc, or you just need a workaround and if there's a tiny, almost invisible hole on the front of the drive, straighten out an ordinary paperclip, insert the paperclip and push hard. That should open the drawer.

Anything the same circumference and strength of a paperclip will work.

Hi Miz, thank you for prompt reply. Clicking Computer, shows no reference to Optical Drive. You are absolutely correct, opening flap a very small hole is visible and I tried the trick of inserting a strightened paper clip into the hole, normally this did the trick to open drawer, but not in this instance. There is no reference at all to drive E in computer short cut. I ran Diagnostic PC-Doctor software and it too showed no reference to the Optical Drive (E).
Either the drive has become dead or connecting cable somehow has become adrift.

FWIW, I had to replace a dead one in Dell Vostro 260 last week. The replacement was $17.99 (USD), including shipping. Had it in three days, took maybe 10 minutes to swap it out. Works great.

    -- edit --

FWIW, for 48 hours, enter Promo Code EMCNBNG54 at checkout and get 15% off all internal CD/DVD burners. In other words, the total for the drive I linked to above would be be $15.29 (USD), including shipping.

Well! I have come to the same conclusion that HP Presario Optical drive has decided to call it a day. I am hoping as the CPU required replacing and obtained from Maplins that in this case, a replacement OD will be bought locally.

Hi all, not being a person for opening and delving into the inners of the computer, a computer repairman who calls on peoples home, was requested to check over the computers inners. His findings where, the Multimedia Optical Drive power cable had become adrift. Tne MOD connector was reunited to the CPU connector and again the MOD was fully functional. My lesson is worth a note in cases of future MOD failure, mind you it was certainly costly.

And that's probably the main reason why so many learn how to take care of the simple tasks inside of their own computers. :)
