    Vista SP1
    HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20 ATA Device [CD-ROM drive]

My mother claims to have never used her CD drive on her computer until recently, after which she noticed it would not work. I tried several simple options: restart, enable/disable, search for drivers, etc. I tried the online Windows fix-it tool and that didn't work. I Googled and came up with a registry fix that I tried and that didn't work.

Before when I tried these solutions, the drive would simply not load the CD and ask for me to insert one that works. Now, the CD drive is acting like a hard drive.

When I tried to do the registry fix, there was upper-filters, but no lower. I'm not sure what's going on there.

Anyways, I'm at a loss. Please help!

Drive letter is I, name of the drive is DVD-CD RW [or something similar], but it's showing a storage progress bar, has hard drive recovery tools and the like. When you right click it for properties, it says type: CD drive, file system: udp

but it also has a tab for disc tools: error check, defragment, etc.

I want to fix the problem for her, then I'm going to downgrade her to XP. ;)

That is really strange and Google is comimg up with nothing relevant .....

You may like to try this ....

With the computer powered down - I am assuming a desktop - physically disconnect the CD-ROM drive cables.

Reboot the computer and shut down.

Reconnect the CD-ROM drive and boot up - test.

Does your mother have any third party burning software installed?
Before doing that do check that XP drivers are available from the manufacturer's web site. If the computer is fairly recent they may not be.

A final thought - try installing Vista SP2 - download here

Is UDP correct? That seems to be a networking file system.

Have you checked many types of disks? A CD-RW that has fixed disk properties could be made with a packet writing program. It works like a floppy disk
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_writing
Programs that can make them are Ahead (Nero) InCD, Roxio DirectCD and Sonic DLA. Vista can open those disks, Windows XP couldn't unless a packet writing program was installed.

Edit: I checked a CD-RW disk formatted by Ahead InCD, it offers Error Checking, defragmentation, etc
