I had a new 48x12x48 CDRW drive installed last week. It was working fine until today. Today I put a music CD into the drive and received the message: "Please insert a disk into Drive E ". I've tried other CD's and nothings happens with any of them. There is no sound or flashing light indicating that the CD is present in the drive. I'm using Windows ME.

    Please help me. Thanks!

The immediate suspect would be a loose power cable. The 4-pin plugs are sometimes hard to push in all the way.

Step 1: pull the cover off and make sure both cables are solidly plugged into the drive. High-speed drives tend to vibrate with some CDs and that can loosen a plug that wasn't inserted all the way.

Step 2: if all the cables are fully seated, double-click My Computer and see if the CD drive is listed.

Step 3: if it is, right-click My Computer, select Properties, click on Device Manager, and see if there is a red or yellow icon visible in the listing for CD-ROM.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks, Dr. Doom. I did as you suggested and re-tightened the cables and then I went to My Computer.......... There is no red or yellow icon visible inthe listing for CD-Rom, only the usual icon with a CD disk. I tried inserting a CD into the drive and it still is not running or being recognized.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

When you put the CD in the tray make sure it is in the very center. My drive jams if the disk is not in exactly straight.

Also, if the tray has "tabs "...these are for vertical mounting of the drive....make sure they are not interferring with the disk.

    Matt

Question: Do any lights come on if you close the tray without putting a CD in?
