    This is similer to http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=44581
question. Win XP created CD does not read in Win 98:confused:

My HDD has crashed so I installed new HDD and installed Win98SE.
Since I couldn't locate my old drivers CD, I downloaded them from Internet and created driver CD in my NOTEBOOK WinXP. This CD is made by using Win XP's CD Writing Wizard. :(

However this CD is only recognized in my notebook and it couldn't recognized in my desk top Win98SE. My CD drive in desk top is DVD-RW drive and I purchased this drive at Christmas. My notebook drive is DVD-ROM/compact disk rewritable. CD I am using is HP invent cd-r 52x 700mb/80min.

I tried music CD created by WinXP and this music CD was recognized by Win98SE. Without these 98 edition of drivers, my Win98SE cannot set modem, USB, and VGA, XVGA and my back up External HDD drive.

Is there any way I can create a data CD that is recognized, read by Win98SE in WinXP operating system? Please help me.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

To get your 98 system up and running again it may be easier to ask a friend to download and burn the drivers onto a disk.

The problem with your system could be in several (read: many) areas.

If you used "Windows " to burn a music disk, it would probably not be Windows (itself), but Windows Media Player using it's built-in "burning plug-in ".

Your notebook manufacturer will have a specialized burning program supplied with the software (examples are Ahead Nero, Adaptec Easy CD/DVD, and Sonic), get to learn how to use that burning program, don't rely on the "Built-in" Windows burner/s. (The format for a music CD can be different to the format of a data CD).

Suggestion 2 :) Try a different brand of media.

I have been assisting friends on dialup connections by burning updates and other downloads to CD and let them use that one instead of through a slow download. I have noticed that in some instances, the CD can not be read by the other PC. It only happens when the medium is CD-RW, never when it is a non-RW CD.

I have not found out why this happens but if you used CD-RW, try a non-RW CD.

Thanks for you comment. I tried different Burner, Quick burner and East DVD/CD burner but cds were not recognized by Win98SE.

Oh and CD I am using is hp invent, CD-r 52x 700MB/80min and still having trouble.
Is it XP, Win98SE or Toshiba Satellite Notebook that is source of the problem?

Have found that the writing software is critical; i. e. if the same software is installed on both computers, they can both read the CDs, R or RW.

If you don't mind, would you tell me which burning software are you using?
Some software is not supporting Win98 environment anymore. Thanks:eek:

It may be a "catch 22 ". Because you have not installed the motherboard drivers in Win 98, it may not be able to read using the CD drive correctly.

Have you, or can you, try a different brand of media other than HP Invent?

Apart from that, the area I would look at is the CD drive in the Win 98 machine. I always have a few spare CD drives to use for swapping and testing. I realize this would not be easy for you.

I was going to suggest getting a USB flash/micro drive. I have two 128 Mb drives that I purchased for less than $20AU. Very handy, BUT I see you need the USB drivers installed as well :(

    My usual last resort...floppy disks.
The driver files that you have downloaded will be too big to fit onto a floppy, but these will be all the individual files compressed with program like WinZip or WinRAR. If you decompress the files into a folder, you will find that the individual files will fit easily onto a floppy if you copy them a "chunk" at a time. The floppy disk shuffle, oh yeah! :D

If you find a file is bigger than 1.44Mb, get a floppy disk spanning program like Spandisk.

    Good luck.

Edit: On sparrow's suggestion and your query, I would try Sonic
    www.sonic.com
    They should have trial software.
I like Nero, Easy CD/DVD is rated as about the best, although I have very rarely used it. Sonic, I have found, has an easy interface and is easy to uninstall if you don't think it is suitable.

    Catch 22

So that is the cause of the problem! I think you are right:eek: That must be the reason it couldn't read the cd-r!

I guess I have to do the old floppy drive trick you mentioned. Too bad I have to borrow some one's computer, because this notebook has no floppy drive. :(

Thank you for Sonic DVD/CD burner info too. Appreciated.
