I was copying files over the entwork to a CD, when a wise soul decided that it was a good time 2 shutdown the PC I was copying from. Since then I have been unable to use the cd Burner. It will only open before Windows finishes loading (before the welcome screen). I tried a USB CD-RW drive that was here as well, but it does the same. Also, when you try to copy files, it says that there is no CD in the drive, even though there is. I have tried with a variety of CDs, and none of them work. I also tried to restore to a point before the wise one's intervention, but this does not work either. Is there a way to fix this without re-installing the whole OS?

Have you tried removing the burner in Device Manager, rebooting and letting Windows find it again? Another thought - physically disconnect the burner - pull off the power cable - boot up - shut down - reconnect the burner - boot up.

What happens if you disconnect the PC with the burner from the Network?

It's always possible that there may be damage/corruption to the burner unit - I've no idea on this.

If worst comes to worst Repair XP - back up data first - if you can - sounds unlikely.

    Moving this to Hardware

    Hi Pete,
I'll try removing the burner from Device manager, and see what happens. As for physically removing it - this is as much a last resort as repairing XP - it's built-in to a laptop. I'll also try removing the PC from the network to see what happens.

    Thanx for the advice!

It worked. I deleted the CD-ROM from Device Manager, restrted the PC, and it re-isntalled it. I then had to restart the machine again for it to access the CD drive, but afterwards, it worked with no probelms at all. Thanx for the help!
