CD Audio File size is 44 bytes only!

    Hi,

My friend has a strange experience. When he installed Music Match Juke Box on Windows 98 SE, his CD audio can not be played after the installation. Before installation, he can enjoy CD Audio on his pc. When we used properties over each file, we found that the file size is 44 bytes only. So, he can not play the audio CD again using any multimedia softwares on his pc. We tried to uninstall Music March Jukebox, but the problem still remain. We also tried to find solution on the net thru Google. But we found nothing.

The question is why this problem occured and how to fix it?

TIA for any guidance and solution.

    Best regards,

    Yasmin

    Hi Yasmin,

I'm not familiar with Music Match Jukebox so I cannot answer the why part of your question. But for a quick fix to the problem I'd suggest doing a Scanreg/Restore.

Do this by restarting or start up your computer and hold the CTRL key or F8 key after the memory test. This will bring you to the Dos options window. Select the command prompt choice ( I believe its #5).

Once you get to the prompt type "Scanreg/Restore" (without the quotes) and press enter. This will take you to a menu of 5 previous registry saves. (Once a day the computer backs up the registry. It saves the 5 most recent.)

Choose one that is before you installed MMJ and press enter.

After you get back to windows, do a complete virus scan. Delete the contents of your Temporary Internet Files folder in the Windows folder. Then, if you're up to it, reinstall MMJ.

I use MM jukebox and mines the same. I've never noticed it before I read this thread and had a look. I've used MMJB for several years and if it did it in previous versions I never noticed. Point is, I've ripped, taped and copied cd's in the past and it's never been a problem. In short, I wouldn't worry about it unless it's causing a problem of some sort.

    Edit:
I just thought of something. I opened windows explorer and right clicked on the drive and chose properties. Strange.... the properties shows zero bytes used and zero bytes free. This is the only problem I can forsee. If you wanted to know if the cd would fit on a cd you were burning you wouldn't be able to tell. But then again, your burning software would tell you if there wasn't enough space on your cdr(w) . So.....

    Hi, John and Zander.

Thanks for your prompt response and guidance. And sorry for late response. I was travelled to several towns outside my hometown for several days and just followed your guidance.

Although the CD Audio Files size remain unchanged (44 bytes for each track), now I can play the audio CD using several multimedia softwares like Winamp, CD Audio Player, etc. As you know, before follwing your guidance, I can't play the audio CDs with such proggies. The only problem is that I can't hear any sound. I check the Volume Control and everything is OK; nothing is set to mute. I try to run the command line "scanreg /fix" from DOS and also reinstalling Windows 98 SE over the existing same OS. But the new problem still not solved.
I think I should deleted following folders: Windows, Program Files and My Documents (after backuping the data) with all related files in Root directory on drive C. And then clean install Windows and other application to solve the problem. But before I do this last option, maybe you have other solutions?

    TIA,

    Yasmin
