The exterior hard drive has started to periodically bleep when computer is switched on. Can this be a sign that HD is malfunction?

Neil, thanks for your help. HD in question is an external 1TB WD. At times or should say periodically it emits 6 bleeps from the computer speaker, as reading the diagnostic tool, refers that HD has no speaker fitted. I just remembered that on one occasion only, caption read to format the drive in question J. Incidentally this drive has the Windows Backups stored. Backups are carried out but the Restore fails due a loss file. Thanks Bobby.
