    It's a permissions issue oddly enough. 2KPro & XP-Pro block any non-admin users from redirecting traffic to LPT1 (net use LPT1 \\computername\printername /yes).

The work-around is to disable LPT1 in Device Manager so that XP will see it as a logical port rather than a physical port. Non-admin users can then capture (redirect output to) LPT1 as they can to other logical ports.

Device Manager (go to Start~Programs~Administrative Tools~Computer Management~Device Manager).

    Expand Ports (COM & LPT).

Right-click Printer Port (LPT1)~Properties~Device usage and "Do not use this device" (disable)

Thanks for the explanation, Newt. I need more experience working as a non-admin, I guess.

djdrastic - did the fix work for you?

Abraxas - been bit by the admin/non-admin differences a few times myself. And some, like this one, when I least expected them.
