    Whatever I may have done I can not figure how to undo it.

    For some unknown reason when I engage the Caps Lock key it precedes and follows every word with a backslash. Like this: \THIS\ \IS\ \HOW\ \IT\ LOOKS.

    Anyone with a solution?

    The NeXT issue does apply in this case. The keyboard is a no-name import as best I can tell.

    \THIS\ \IS\ \A\ \IRRITATING\ \ISSUE\ \AS\ \YOU\ \CAN\ \IMAGINE\

    Does it do the same thing if you type with the shift key held down?

    Does rebooting help?

    Have you tried a different keyboard?

    With the pc off, have you unplugged - replugged in the keyboard?

    another possible line of attack:

    - use a startup floppy to get a DOS prompt, see if you still get the unwanted backslashes

    - if the above works without backslashes, try starting the computer using F8 to get "Command Prompt Only ", see what that yields...

    if the two tests above give different results, suspect probably COMMAND.COM or IO.SYS on your HDD

    - if both the above work OK (without backslashes), start Windows "normally" and raise a DOS box under Windows; see what happens typing into the DOS box with Windows running...

    ==

    ...working along the lines of trying to see how little you can have running and still keep the fault...

    interesting! - hope you get to the bottom of it

    best wishes, HJ
