I downloaded and isntalled the new IrfanView 3.61 and all the accompanying plugins. However when I try to view AVI files, I get the sound, but no video. Instead there's an error message that says it can't find the MPEG4 decompressor. However, I was able to play these files the day before yesterday and did nothing to IrfanView at that time. I uninstalled and reinstalled IrfanView + reinstalled the plugins, to no avail.

I believe the trouble may have started when I installed RealOne Player (a program I do not recommend). I've since uninstalled it, but still can't get IrfanView to play AVI files.

    viewing AVI files w/infraview

Don't know if this will help or not, but when infraview is up there is a place in one of its menus to bring up the viewer(player). I don't have it installed at work but when I get home will check it out and let you know. When I send some movie files to infraview I get the message you got, but when I bring up the player in infraview and then open the file, it works.

    infanview viewing avi files

Also, the specific avi files you are trying to view may require a codex decompressor that infanview does not have in its plugins?

You got it! TY so much. I love IrfanView, but it's stupid that you have to open it in the Multimedia Player, esp when they worked in the old version. Is there any way I can set up my associations so the AVI files will open in the IrfanView Multimedia Player? TIA.

    irfanview file assoc.

Glad you found it, I was going to tell you where when I got home. Try Options, properties, extensions and associate irfanview with your avi files and see what happens. I am not sure if it will open the irfanview application or the media player in irfanview? I have mine associated with Win Media player, but I agree with you that iranview is pretty good.

IrfanView is nice cause it doesn't use as much memory as WMP. A few extra clicks aren't a big deal.
