cant update windows/download antivirus/slow system

I cant update windows, or download avast antivirus says setup self extract error 1006 (000003EE) I also tried AVG cant download. spybot search and destroy said elexa related. system really slow too. Finally was able to download Dekards system scanner. I dont know alot about computers, but here are some logs I have. Thanks for helping me.

When did the problem with Windows Update begin, before or after you did the re-installation of Windows?
Did you do a system restore prior to the re-installation?
When trying to download (AVG or Avast), are you choosing to Save the file to your hard drive? Does the download begin? Does it save successfully then error out when trying to install?

Basically, give us a good description of recent events and what you have done to correct the problems.

Your system currently appears to be a basic XP installation with no service packs. Is this due to a recent installation using a pre-SP1 cd? Was the system previously updated to SP1 or higher?

I had problems with computer before I reinstalled windows and I didnt make a restore point. First install I had problems like computer would not turn off, ran slow. I reinstalled again and computer would turn off, but I could not get windows update, or install antivirus.

when installing antivirus I run open program, and when It is giving me the extract it says an error 1006(000003EE) last performed opperation open self extract archive extract. errors out when trying to install.

I have reloaded windows everytime my computer gets real slow, but have problems at first because my xp disk is from back around the year 2001 and is hard to install because of the updates sp1 and sp2 . but I always seem to get it to install but have problems of working 100% correct. add and remove program says horfix on sp1 and sp2 and a few other updates.

I get the update icon in my task bar but it says 0% updates. It did say 49% updates once, but then vanished and pops back up to 0% updates. I have tried to go to ms update, but it never seems to get any updates and the ms update icon in task bar arrives and stays on zero. when I put my pointer on icon it goes away.

I have tried dial a fix and still not able to update. let me know if you need any more info.

Are you still using dialup?
Can you burn a cd and do you have a blank cd?
Do you have driver discs for your computer?

 

yes I'm still using dialup. when you say burn a cd. As in save to documents and copy to d drive? I do have data CD-R. (700 MB)
I have AOL dialup, and I know it is slow. But it was acctually quite fast like 5 -7 seconds to load aol page. when I use IE it is slower, maybe 10-12 seconds, but now IE takes (i just timed it) 1.5 minutes to open page and 3.2 minutes for page to fill in completly. Let me know if you need more info. I also have driver disks for my matsonic mobo MS8308/E sis 730s 266MHZ

Hi Bill,

Honestly, I think it's time to completely wipe the drive and start with a fresh clean installation. SP3 is available now in an ISO format, meaning it can easily be burned to a cd. SP3 is a cumulative update ..... it contains all updates for Windows XP. You would need only burn an SP3 cd, clean install the operating system, then install SP3 to be current. The download however, is quite large ...... 544.9 MB to be exact. That's roughly a 23 hour download on dialup. If you decide to download it, I recommend you first install and use a download manager that can resume the download where it left off, in case of disconnection. I've had good results with Metaproducts Download Express.

To burn the ISO file to cd, you will need an application capable of handling ISO files. I use and recommend ISO Recorder by Alex Feinman. Once installed, you need only to insert a blank cd, right click an ISO file and select Copy Image to CD.

I will try to do a clean install and get a friend to burn cd for me. But Lately when I reinstall windows I get a message that I have a newer version of windows and I cant. when I reinstalled windows this time I had to put floppys and try to install, then switch over to xp cd, somehow I was able to reinstall xp, but ussually says some files are corrupt.(hard to remember now since I reinstalled two times and reading all kinds of posts on bbs site LOL) The first time I always had to turn of computer with emergency shut down, second install ended up able to turn computer off, but not able to down load window updates. If I have trouble I will post back on my other computer "old faithful "
windows melinium os. LOL I will let you know how everything turns out.

Don't do a repair installation next time, but a clean installation. This means wiping everything off the drive and installing fresh. If you have files you want to preserve, you will need to back them up to an external media source.
