Windows Vista Can't update KB2360131

Hello to whoever is willing to help.
for some reason, I can't update the mentioned update.
I tried downloading the stand alone update from microsoft, didn't work either.
I get this message in the windows update log file :

I also tried exiting my kaspersky AV and trying to install. didn't help either.
I'm on vista sp2.

This is a shot in the dark. I've had file-system corruption from Kaspersky which corrected as soon as I completely uninstalled all files/folders/registry entries. This was with older versions around 7. Not much, but it's all I can think of. [If you go this route, try installing the MS update with the standalone-installer offline__and keep a copy of Kaspersky installer and license to install before connecting to the net.]

 

Welcome to BBS, Please follow the instructions below so we an see what is going on. As virus software can interfere with updates you could first try jabrwky's idea, might be worth a shot.

 

Tried uninstalling kaspersky and then installing with standalone.
didn't work.

could it be a bad sector problem or something like that ?

This is a sign that your hard drive has faults. First thing you should do is to back up all your important data, just to be on the safe side. Then click Start, type cmd in the search box and then right click on cmd.exe and select "Run as Admisnistrator ". At the command prompt type chkdsk /r hit enter and then you will be asked if you wish to run chkdsk on reboot type in Y and enter. Reboot and chkdsk will run. This should inform you if there are any bad sectors on the hard drive. It will also check the integrity of the file system. Chkdsk can take quite a while to run and may appear to freeze, be patient and let it complete and report back with the results.

If you want a thorough scan of your hard disk you will need to download and burn an image file for disk diagnostics from the hard drive manufacturers site. I can give the links for that if you tell me the make and model of your hard drive.

 

I downloaded the WD diagnostic tool. It stated that he found bad sectors, but trying to "Repair" them, immediately failed.

As I had advised back in post 7 you should back up all your important data as soon as possible. It may be possible to continue using the disk, running chkdsk /r will stop the system using the bad sectors. If you do a full format on the drive it may fix the bad sectors but it would be advisable to purchase a new hard drive to be sure your system is going to remain reliable.

 

After a few weeks I got back to this subject.
I ran chkdsk /r, and got the following results :

you could also try to reinstall the service pack for the operating system your using. I don't know if it will work for you but thats what I ended having to do when something like this happened to me. Just a suggestion it might fix the problem and you might avoid having to format your hard drive
