    Hello everyone

I thought I should update drivers and Bios before installing new hard drive (200GB replacing 18GB) but can't seem to get update to install. Mobo is Intel D845HV. Tried 2 variants from Intel. Goes through install setup then reboots and message box says 'installation was unsuccessful.....view readme to troubleshoot'. I did manage to get the utility installed for the SM Bus, after a couple of tries. The only thing I can see in the 'read me' I haven't done is disable active desktop during setup, because I haven't found an option to do so.

    XP Home SP1
    Pentium 4
    1.5 Ghz
Can give more details as needed.

I don't like to flash the BIOS unless there is a specific reason to do so- not a hardware change. You can reset CMOS to the default fairly easily, if you are concerned that you may have tweaked where you should have twunked. You have an OEM board, too, might not be able to do anything with it because of factory presets.

Shut down computer, unplug computer, take off the case, disconnect power supply from mobo, locate pins, move them to the reset position, take three deep breaths and move them back, reconnect everything and boot.

    HTH

    Thanks Johanna

Don't think I tweaked or twunked anything I shouldn't have. Things are still functioning properly. I was just looking thru system components with aida32 and there was a recommendation to update system BIOS and video BIOS. It was then I realized I haven't updated any other drivers either so went toolin around trying to update as much as possible. Worried the system in it's current state won't support the drive well. Guess I should just leave well enough alone till something gives me problems.

Third rule of comps: KISS (keep it simple, stupid!)

If something gives you problems, let's go from there. ( XP is good about updating drivers automatically, too.)

Can't wait to hear how you like that massive HD!

    Cheers from Ohio,
    Johanna

LOL! Think I skipped rules 1 and 2. I'll be sure to let you know about the drive. BTW, I put ETrust AV back in today and the firewall seems to be very user friendly.

Good to know about EZ trust. Have not heard any negative feedback (we will next year when we are obligated to pay their yet to be officially announced price!) Have not taken the plunge, yet. Norton imbeds itself so deep into XP that it would be easier to do a C drive wipe than a clean up after an uninstall- (don't you agree, BB?)
I might challenge you on world's records for crashes. Since mine could go at anytime, I'll prob install it next reformat!

Keep us up to date about EZ, too, if you have the time.

Sure will! Price for the EZ Armor, which is firewall and AV pretty sure was $49.95 year. AV only I think was $24.95.
