i was trying out the norton systemwork 2002 and didn't quite like it so i un-install it,but somehow the program didn't un-install itself clean, leaving some a/v "things" behind cos when i tried to just install the norton a/v,the message

"another version of this product is already installed.installation of this version cannot con't.to configure or remove the existing of this product, use add/remove prigram on the control panel. "

i even went to regedit to delete anything that has the word "symantec" and run regcleaner, but it's STILL there.

what else can i do or didn't do ????????

Did you at any point try the Symantec recommended method of using symclean.exe? Take a look Here.

    done that

"The SYMClean tool has detected no additional items
    that need to be removed.
You can proceed to install your Symantec Applicatons. "

i've tried re-installing it but the same message still appeared.

"another version of this product is already installed.installation of this version cannot con't. to configure or remove the existing of this product, use add/remove program on the control panel. "

Since I seem to remember from the other thread about this issue that you deleted the folder containing all your Symantec files, it may be tough for the removal program to track down all the entries.

You could try regedt32 and a search for norton. I have systemworks on my PC and found lots of references containing that string.

Good idea Newt. I had to do just that at one time with 98.

Just using Symantec may not get them all. As a lot of the keys refer to a Norton folder.

Being called to dinner add a little more later.

I am back after a very nice dinner of Pork Chops, Spanish Rice, Esparagus topped off with a good cup of "Good To the Last Drop" Coffee.

I do not know exactly how you would go about this with XP, but I assume there would be a way. And be the Same basics that I use in 98 FE using Scanregw.

Before installing ANY software I do a Virus & Trojan Check. Empty the Recycle Bin and C:\Windows\temp folder.

Run Defrag. GO to the C:\Windows\sysbckup folder and delete All rb00x.cab files. Then reboot the PC. ( not just a Windows restart ).

Check for a new rb00x.cab file. If none is found I run scanregw and make one and restart Windows again.

    Install new software.

Software install goes bad or is not liked.

    Un-install the software.

Boot to command Prompt at boot up and do a scanreg /restore using a known to be good reg backup.

Poof !! I am back where I was before I installed the software.

I find it a GREAT way to fix a bad install.

The way I understand things this could be done with ME & XP using System Restore.
Even though I did not really care for Windows ME, I did find that System Restore would be very helpfull if used properly.

Symnatec leaves a whole slew of entries in the Hkey_Classes_Root\CLSID key, in addition to the Hkey_Local_Machine\Software key. Using Regcleanr available here would make it an easier job of rooting them out.

thanks for all your replies, have also tried the jv16 .

anyway,it's so stupid of me not to remember that, there is a program called "RESTORE" in winXP. ( see.......so stupid of me )

done the restore then remove the av by "add/remove" (symclean) n re-boot.
but it's still there,so this time,i again use symclean but click "continue" to remove it "manually" then re-boot.

    VOILA !!!!!!!! IT'S TOTALLY GONE........G...O...N...E........

    :D :D :D :D :D

:):) That is VERY GOOD NEWS to start the day off with :):)

Don't be so rough on yourself. Most of the rest of us have been there one time or another.

You can now use this experience to your advantage.

If you make a restore point just before installing new software it should get rid of it all next time.

The Scanregw and scanreg /restore that I use does. But mine only works on the registry. Your restore should get rid of the software also ( I THINK )
