I have Windows XP Home SP3 Everytime I logon my Windows automatically Maps to my Z drive. I want to disable this. I've tried NET USE Z: /delete and NET USE /persistent:NO. Still , the next time I logon It maps back to my Z drive. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this automatic mapping?

Have you opened My Computer, highlighted the drive, then gone to Tools -> Disconnect Network Drive...?

Z: might be a somewhat poor choice of drive letter. Some transient programs can want to map a temporary drive using the letter Z. Try setting it to another letter if you want it mapped again. Another proposal would be to use My Network Places instead of mapping, that will save drive (network) locations for you.

I was able to disconnect the Z drive per your instructions and it goes away as usual but the next time I logon , It automatically maps back again. I don't want it to reconnect on logon

I have a wireless home network .I have a wireless printer which is the mapped device on drive Z: The path name is an IP address and the printer name..For example(192.xxx.xxx.xx\HP87678 (Z: ) This began when I was installing a new printer on my network. It was not intentional.

Do you remember exactly what you did to make it happen? You seem to have entered the drive letter into the settings of a startup program (one which probably looks for the printer). You might need to completely uninstall the program that is looking for the drive(?) and reinstall it (avoiding putting the drive in this time, of course).

You talk about a new printer, are you still using the old printer? If you are not using both, you should uninstall all the software for the unused one.

Problems with HP printers usually need a complete uninstall and reinstall, but if you think the HP is the problem, go to their website and look up the printer's model, check the troubleshooting/FAQ information (also check the User Guide/manual). If nothing else, they might tell you about a "complete uninstaller ".

I had problems installing the printer (I know now it was my firewall blocking the complete installation) So in desperation , I used the The "Add Printer " Wizard in order to add a Network Printer . I searched for my printer using it's IP address. I think your right about Completely uninstalling the printer, Disabling my Firewall, and then reinstalling it. I'll try that and let you know the results. And thanks for hanging with me on this.

Which firewall are you using ? Firewall should not normally interfere with installation unless the installer tries to go to internet.

My firewall is part of a virus protection program named Invisus. I was able to install my printer only after disabling it then later unblocking the port the firewall was blocking. I uninstalled my HP printer, ran windows installer cleaner, disabled all HP startup files, Deleted any and all HP folders from Explorer, Deleted all printer Icons from the printer folders. Rebooted and it was gone. Installed the printer and it mapped right back to the Z:. I'll check HP's website to see if that's normal or not

Ok, I have a Photosmart HP4700 Wireless. What your describing is exactly what I have. I have never seen this configuration before and I've been through 2 Dell printers, 2 Lexmarks and now this HP. If that's a normal connection, then it is what it is. Thanks for the info!

Did your HP come with a CD/DVDRW drive. Thats the (Z: ) drive. Don't change anything you'll lose your wireless connection and you will have to reinstall. I hope this helped you.

Yeah it does. Along with the naming of Z: drive, It has "Memory Card" Next to it.( Z:\C4700_memorycard )It thinks it's mapping to a storage drive. My printer does not have a cd drive but it has a slot for a SD memory card

Mine also came with SD Memory Card Reader slots. I take it is working fine. If you try and change it there is a good chance you could lose your wireless conectivity to your printer.
