    Hi,

I am completely new to laptops and add to that, the Vista OS and I am clueless.

Right off the bat, I found that I could not find the Shut down on my computer. I had to unplug and remove the battery last night. I closed the top, turned off the power switch, but none of this shuts off the Power light display on front of the computer.

How can I turn this power light off? TIA

The power light on my Dell stays on all the time;)

Might want to look in the manual, but odds are, it's doing what it's suppose to do..

Have you found Vista's shutdown option yet?

    Hi Ann

    Let's clarify ....

You shut down Vista via the Start Button ......

The power light on the front of the laptop remains on?

Is the laptop plugged into the AC adaptor at this time - if it is the power light will remain on as the battery charges - different behaviour on different makes, but that's the general gist.

If the laptop is not connected to the AC adaptor and the power light remains on I would suspect a fault in the laptop, but others may know better.

Steve, are you saying that even when disconnected and without a battery, you still have the power light on all the time?
I have not yet found the Shut Down, but I haven't opened the darn laptop today. I was thinking I had to return it. :(

    Hi Pete,

I shut off by closing the top and then I opened the top again and used the Power button to power off. I have never found the Shut Down from the Start Button. I guess I was too tired last night when I started playing around with it.

Power light remains on, without connection to AC adaptor and without battery. BTW, does it do any harm to remove the battery?
Will the power light go off when the battery is fully charged?

    Thanks for clarifying this.

Nope. My light only stays on when plugged into the wall.

The Vista shutdown ->Click the START button->Look for the arrow > in the lower right hand corner.

I just tried the laptop again and got the dos window because Shut Down was not done correctly. Clicked on Start and did find Shut Down by following the arrow all on my own. :D The darn thing is harder to find than a sunken treasure ship. But thanks for your directions. Laptop and Vista is too much for a senior. :(

Pete - My husband just informed me that he had not yet taken out the battery when I last checked the computer and I thought he had.

Apparently using the power switch or closing the top of the laptop does not correctly shut down the system, just like any desktop. Booted up and shut down properly and now the only light that remains on is the battery light which is amber. I have checked my manual but can't find anything about what this means. I am almost sure that last night it was green. In order to make sure the battery is fully charged I will leave it on to see it changes color.

Laptop seems OK. Users are kaput! Thanks for the help. I am sure I'll be back.

    Ann

PS Can you run the laptop without having a battery installed? Don't see the need if you use the AC adapter.

On some you can - on others no. Read the manual or give it a try. However little point, running on AC will keep the battery charged up and when fully charged it will effectively be bypassed. And there will come a time when you will want to run on battery alone - and it may be flat :)

These can be configured from the Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Power Options

Amber usually means it is charging...

You usually can, but I don't think you should. It's designed to be there.. i.e. without battery there will be more chance for dust to enter the system.

Great! I prefer to just close the top and have it shut down properly. Thanks a bunch!
