Hello, my friend had asked me for help but I don't have a clue...
But anyways, here's the scenario :

2 machines, both with win98. Computer#1 connects to the cable modem, through an internal NIC. It also has an external USB Ethernet Adapter, which connects to Computer#2, to give it internet access.

The problem is that Computer#1 can't send or recieve files to anyone. Well, it can send to people without firewalls. But can't recieve files at all, except if it's an http link. It can't connect to other computers over the internet, and other computers can't connect to it.

We haven't tested if Computer#2 can or not, but we can deal with that later...

We thought it was a firewall but there's no firewall installed. Is there something else?

    Thanks.:)

You don't say how you are sharing the internet connection but if it is ICS, you do have a firewall.

Send & receive files how? FTP, IRC, how?

Um.. send and recieve files as in IRC, or ICQ/MSN or pretty much anything that needs a direct connection. Even games too.

I can't check to see wether is ICS or not right now, but if it is, how do we disable the firewall?

Don't need to disable it. Don't want to disable it. Just need to open the ports your apps want to use for sending/receiving files.

Take a look Here for a pretty complete listing of the usual ports for popular applications including the ones you mention.

Hmm... I have a feeling it is ICS but can you tell me how to forward the ports?

Or how to check if it is ICS?

Awk - you don't want to forward the ports probably. You will just want to open the firewall to those ports so it will pass traffic to & from PCs if the packet is addressed to that port. Port forwarding is another thing altogether. More on that later probably.

As to the "is it ICS" part - if you are sharing a modem thru software (as opposed to a hardware router/switch or something) and if you used the software from Microsoft (as opposed to buying Wingate/Sygate/etc.) you are using ICS.

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Internet, click the Connection tab, click the Sharing tab, and see if Internet Connection Sharing is there. Or, there is an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Adapter in Device Manager.
