    Hi friends

In a win7 pc when i try to set any of the printers to default, get the error 0x00000709 (see attached). Tried to solve by restarting win7 or restart printer spooler service still same problem.

I imagine window files got corrupted. Any good solution?

    Neil for the record

The reason for not being able to set printer to default was 1) one other non existent printer was having 10+ documents on queue so it can't be delete. It may also be due to having to tinker with the registry manually as your links said.

Once that queue is removed, next remove the non existent printer, other printers can be set as default.

    Cheers!

Yes they can be a curse when print queue enlarges but no print emerges. I've just been re-arranging and cleaning my comp and because I use HP cartridges which have been refilled by Cartridge World, today the HP printer decided to keep telling me the cartridge is faulty!!!
It's times like this I hate HP :mad: It's real annoying when the printer does 4-5 sheets - then decides to refuse to print the last 3 of a job.
HP cartridges are nearly 3 times the price of a refilled one.
Glad to see you got sorted. Neil.

    Neil ...

Just another reason why I'd never buy an HP printer. I've had good luck with Canon printers and Linkyo cartridges. They also have HP cartridges and offer a two year money back guarantee.

Jim, I don't have any problem with the HP printer - just the software nag about buying HP only cartridges. The fact that I use the original HP cartridge and get them refilled is when the circuit needs to be reset so that the HP will recognize it's own cartridge. It tells me on screen that it is a 'Pirate' unit and that I will miss "Bonus Deals" from HP if I don't purchase HP cartridges.
    This is flagrant monopoly idiocy.
All HP need to do is get out of the cartridge business or move with the times.
I did try Canon once but when the machine locks after a preset number of print jobs and must be taken to a "Canon service agent" to be cleaned and serviced for more than the cost of a new unit - I ask you
To rub salt into the wound, I Googled and found an Ex Canon service guy who provided the necessary procedure to unlock the service lock which enabled me to use the printer, but, would you believe it, 6 months down the track the print head needed to be renewed.
I then tried Epson and although a good Multi-Function colour printer it had a software circuit problem. Hence the move to HP.
There are still a few brands of printers out there that I haven't tried yet......

    Neil ...

They won't do either because selling ink is where they make their money with inkjets ... they practically give the printers away.

I've owned several Canon inkjet printers and never had that particular problem. My Canon i850 and s900 inkjet printers shut down because their waste ink tanks became full. Even though I found instructions online for cleaning the tanks, I was unable to remove the cases to do so, and they became expensive doorstops. My present Canon Pixma iP4920 is used ONLY for printing photos. I use inexpensive color and B/W laser printers for all other work.
