When I try to run Windows update, I get an error message stating:

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer Downloads website.

If you prefer to use a different web browser, you can obtain updates from the Microsoft Download Center or you can stay up to date with the latest critical and security updates by using Automatic Updates. To turn on Automatic Updates:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off.

I know why I am getting this error, it's because when I open IE and type in javascript:navigator.userAgent, I get this returned:

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; InfoPath.2; IEMB3)

No matter what browser I use, IE or Mozilla, my computer thinks I am running mozilla. Please Help!

I have already tried disabling my firewall, which some say can cause this, but no help.

Did you accidentally make Mozilla your default browser when installing it?
Try removing it so that IE can again be used.

I agree with geothom31 above. Another work around is to specifically open IE & go to MS Update. That way you can keep Firefox or whatever other browser you may be using your default browser. Just be sure to use IE for manual updates. Or whenever crawling around MS's site.

That is normal; every Microsoft browser identifies itself with the Mozilla string, as it has become a web standard.

    This is IE8 on Win7:

    Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)

I have set IE as the default web browser and still no luck, I keep getting the same message. I have also tried opening IE and doing the Windows update through IE but still no luck.

For some strange reason, it just cannot detect that I am using IE.

What is your windows version reported when you type Winver in the Start > Run box?

Which version of IE are you running?
