    Please help!

Using MS Word 2000 (v 9.0.2720), I saved a one page document to my 3 1/2" drive. Now it wont open it. I get the error msg:

"The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
Check the file permissive for the document or drive.
Use the file open dialog box to locate the3 document. "

The drive makes noise trying to retrieve the file; the file is listed as being on the disk but fails to open....now what?!:(

If the disk is damaged, then you're probably out of luck. You can try running scandisk on the floppy, sometimes it will work. If you recover it, throw that floppy away. Also, Word does have a autosave feature, trying running "find" filename from start and look on your harddrive.

    Two things to try.
    1. Run Word first, and then use File > Open
    2. Use Explorer to Drag/drop the file back to the harddrive.

And a recommendation (since I have seen other posts about saves not going well), save the file to the harddrive, and when you are done editting, use Explorer/My Computer to drag it onto the floppy drive.

    Thanks, but....

been there, done that. Doesn't help.

I can't run scandisk, don't have it! I am on a network system at work, all that "stuff" (scandisk, defrag, virusscan, etc) is done remotely.

Also tried running "find" filename from start and looking on the harddrive, can hear the 3 1/2 whirring and trying, but it can't read the file.

I did try running Word first and then use File > Open. Again hear the drive trying to read the file.

I also tried to use Explorer to Drag/drop the file back to the harddrive, and I get the same error msg....

Have you tried the floppy in another computer? Floppy drives go bad often. If you have a home computer, try the scan disk on it. Or if someone has a laptop at work.

Can you load any files from any floppy? Loading from the floppy could have been disabled by the Administrator by policy or some program like DeviceLock.

    And guess what happened now?

First of all, thanks for all the help everyone. We took the floppy home (where we have scandisk) from work and was able to retrieve the file!

Next day at work we took a fresh, brand new floppy and tried to save another new word document. IT DID THE SAME THING WITH THE SAME ERROR MSG!.

We plan on having the drive replaced soon...

    Hi fireman#4

At my former office, which was an industrial type enviroment, had a dust problem. Even though the office had filtered air, dust still found it's way into the floppy drives. When dirty.... they just don't work. Every couple of months, running a "disk cleaner" disk in the drive brought it back to reliable performance. Not saying your current drive may require replacing. But if dust is causing the problem, the problem will return.
