    Some friends unwisely gave their teenage son free rein on their Acer laptop. I've fixed most of the damage but I'm having trouble getting the Recycle Bin icon back to normal (the intruder is kinda like a white fruit bowl on a black background).

    I've tried the Desktop properties\Change Icon\Reset defaults route with no success. I've also tried a registry hack that restores or deletes the Recycle Bin icon, but after a delete and restore, the foreigner just comes back.

    The hack goes like this:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
    The key, to add or delete is:
    {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

    There's another, more fulsome, (40-odd lines) reg.fix here, but that didn't work either

    I'm beginning to wonder if this icon is related to a World of Warcraft theme that the kid had installed. I dumped the theme via Add\Remove Programs, but maybe this icon escaped the removal process.

    Advice would be appreciated....:)

    Thanks Evan, but I'd already tried those fixes.

    However, it's sorted now - turned out to be a corrupt icon cache. The cache was in /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data, under the name 'IconCache.db'. All I had to do was delete it, reboot and it was automatically repopulated with the icons specified in the registry.

    Cheers :)
