    I have a folder in the C:\ directory in windows xp. The folder name appears to be a single special character ('dir ?' shows the time and date, but no name).

    I don't know what the special character is, so I can't use the alt-code, and explorer won't let me delete or rename the folder - I get the error message: 'Cannot read from the source file or disk'.

    Does anyone know of a way to delete such a file?

    Thanks!

    In the absence of any other expertise.....

    Download and install FileTargets:

    http://www.moonsoftware.com/

    Choose from the right-click menu to copy the the file name to the clipboard.

    Run: cmd

    Type:
    del

    and then right-click the cmd window and Paste the filename.

    <Enter>

    (You may need to introduce a space at some point.)
