    Operating System: WIndows XP

    To sign in to WIndows Messenger a form or box opens called ".NET Messenger Service ". In error an e-mail address was entered that is causing the users of the computer distress but I am not able to delete the e-mail adress from the pull-down list.

    In other forms such as at Hotmail once the name is highlighted then it can be deleted but that does not work with Messenger.
    The program was unintsalled using a code i got from the internet but when i downloaded and set it up again the same e-mail address is still there as it seems to be stored somewhere I cannot locate on my pc.

    Remove Instant Messaging Users for Windows Messenger on Windows XP-Based Comp

    Rod, thanks very much. This was exactly my problem and the solution.

    I had written Microsoft support and they could not understand what my problem was. No wonder! It would have been so easier to allow deletion from the form itself!

    This site is great!

    WindowsXP Welcome Screen

    Related to this same problem, the welcome screen where one selects yr user name to log on, is showing that I have unread mail related to an account at Hotmail that I want to keep private.

    How do I clear this? And stop the notifications? The mails have been read but the notice is still showing.

    Do you have Hotmail set up as an account within Outlook Express? If so, then the number of messages will display on the login/welcome screen. Deleting the account in Outlook, and checking your Hotmail account manually should resolve your problem.

    I have a Hotmail account, but I do not have it set up as an account without Outlook, as such the number of unread messages displaying on my login/welcome screen only contains those within Outloook Express itself.

    Hope this helps. :)

    I had set up Hotmail in Outlook but had already deleted it. So there was no mail accounto delete.

    I downloaded TweakUI as suggested by another member and by deselcting "show unread mail on welcome scrren" and solved the problem.

    Thanks so much. There is much to learn.

    Glad to see you found a fix. In looking at this issue further I found that even though you deleted the Hotmail Account from Outlook it will continue to show the number of last known unread messages due to a key in your registry.

    There is a way to fix this in the registry if you are interested;

    Click on Start, Run, type in Regedit, click on OK.

    Navagate to;

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Unreadmail\username@hotmail.com.

    Edit the Message Count Key to reflect 0 in the Value Data.

    NOTE: To be on the safe side remember to always back up your registry before making any changes.

    :D

    I am not sure how to back up the registry but I am still reading on it. The Help Index in the Regisrty editor suggested a program called 'Backup' which I don't have.

    I found, where you specified, a folder for the e-mail address I don't want. Can I delete the entire folder instead of just changing the value of 12 to zero?

    Start Regedit, navigate to the location I outlined in my last post. Click once on the folder to highlight it, now click on FILE, EXPORT. A window will open asking you what you want to name the file and where you want to store it. Give the file a name like Backup, and store it somewhere you can remember in case you need it again. What you've just done is create a copy of the registry entry that we are going to modify.

    Once this is done follow the directions in my previous post and edit the Message Count Value Data to 0. Do not delete the folder, it does not take up any real space and its not hurting anything.

    After you have modifed the Message Count, double click on the Application key and make sure that the value data is set to; http://www.hotmail.com/

    After you're done doing this you should never see the number of unread hotmail message listed again unless you create another account in Outlook for Hotmail.

    Hope this helps! :D
