Just upgraded to Windows 2000 Pro from Win 98SE. Had a 98 USB Flash Driver installed in 98 and did not remove it before I installed Win 2K. Now when I connect the Flash drive it is detected and the system will reboot instantly. I am unable to remove the Flash Drive software as it is for Win 98. How can I fix this problem?

Try just upgrading the driver to the win2k version.

There is no driver for a flash drive in Win2K. I think the problem is that the Win98 flash drive driver is crashing with the Win2k as the system reboots as soon as the flash dirve is detected by the OS. Some how I need to remover the old Win98 driver but Win 2k will not let me.

There has to be a driver in win2k for the drive, else the drive is not compatavle with win2k, in which case then just use add remove hardware to uninstall the device. The device will not work on any operating system without a driver for it.

You could unstall the device and 98 drivers manually too. You'd have to delete all related files and then edit the registry and remove all references to the drive and it's software. Note, you must be logged on as admin to do this.

To locate the 98 driver use Device Manager/Properties/Driver details for the drive and you can then delete it. Probably in the WINNT\INF folder.

Also, try upgrading to Service Pack 4. SP3 added more support for usb devices in win2k. SP4 contains all previous updates.

And next time, do not do an operating system upgrade, always start fresh with a clean install by formatting the drive thus removing the earlier operating system.
