Can't Reinstall or Uninstall Windows Media Player

I'm currently running WMP 10 on a Win XP Pro SP2 computer.

When I try to play any kind of file, I get the message: "Windows media player encountered an unknown error ". A very vague message.

I tried to reinstall WMP 10 but get the message: "It was not possible to complete setup ". Another vague message.

When I tried to rollback WMP to version 9, I get the message "Windows Media Player 10 rollback failed ". My final vague message.

I'm stuck.

I'm peeved because I had this problem last week, I reinstalled WMP 10 and everything was working fine.

I need this fixed this weekend because my hubby and I want to watch March Madness on CBSSportsline and, because we're in Canada, we can't see all the games on TV. The timing couldn't have been worse.
