Resolved Can't record sound from sound card

I've tried recording music (free, PD, non-DRM music) from my PC's built-in sound card from the Internet -- what you normally hear coming from the speakers -- using the built-in Win7 Sound Recorder, Audacity, Free Hi-Q Recorder, and Free Sound Recorder, but I can't get anything from any of those apps. I've followed all the Windows hardware instructions and those accompanying these programs, and enabled, disabled and re-enabled the microphone and the speakers in all possible combinations, but it's still no-go.

I can play back any and all sounds from the Internet, audio CDs, DVDs, MP3s, etc., with no problem.

Is it possible that Windows is not allowing me to record sounds from my sound card? Am I missing something? I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

P.S. This was all so easy and worked perfectly in WinXP.

 

Update: I Googled more free sound recorders and finally found one that overcomes or sidesteps the problem. It's FreeCorder 4 (http://www.applian.com/freecorder4/). One of its capabilities -- the only one I'm interested in -- is recording the sound that normally goes to the speakers in Windows 7! I hate the idea of adding a toolbar to Firefox (and Internet Explorer 8), but I'll try to live with it for a while and see if or how obnoxious it becomes. It seems to work great for what I need.

Any comments or watchouts?
