My computer has the Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum with the front panel that goes into a 5.25" drive bay. The Platinum drive has composite inputs where you can hookup say a TV, VCR or external CD player and play their sound over the computer's speakers.

I decided to test it by hooking up my old Discman CD player and it worked fine, playing the CD over my computer's speakers. However, I then went into Creative Wave Studio becaus I wanted to try recording an MP3 off the CD, but it didn't work. I hit record and it just sat there at 0% and never got beyond it.

Was I using the right program, or do I need to use Creative Recorder instead? What I want to do is hook my VCR up to my computer and record some music off the video tape because one of my movies has beautiful music, but no sound track is available.

You're doing things right. It's normal for it to not go off 0% when you record for this reason. When you record a song the program has no idea how long it's going to be recording. It doesn't know if it has to record for a minute or for an hour so there's no way for it to calculate the percentage of the recording that is done. The percentage thing is there for editing. For an example of what I'm talking about, open wave studio and push the record button and let it record 5 - 10 seconds of silence. You won't see anything happening. Just a gray screen. When you stop it, the screen will change to a white screen with a blue and a red line in it. Each line represents one of the two stereo channels. Now click somewhere in the middle of the screen and while holding your left mouse button down drag it across the screen either to the right or left. You should now have a highlighted area. Now, in the audio menu go to record special and then record over selection. The percentage thing will now work because it has a specific amount of time to calculate from. If you've tried recording something from your cdrom already and after stopping the recording you only have silence most likely you just need to choose the proper recording source. To do this open the volume control applet and click on options\properties and then choose recording. Click ok and then put a check mark in the box beneath the cdrom or whichever you want to record from. You can also control the volume of the recording from here. Hope this helps ya. If you have questions post back.

I had a series of vertical black lines while I was recording. After I hit Stop, I did see the red and blue lines you mentioned. Perhaps I'll try it again later and try hitting playback in the program and see if it recorded from the CD. BTW, I wasn't using the CDROM, I was using a Discman hooked up thru the Audigy drive's composite jacks (the red and white). Thx again.

Sonofagun, it worked! So what I'll do next is hook my TV's sound outputs up to the Audigy drive and then record the music off the video tape and then use my DB Power Amp to convert it to MP3. What a sweet deal. Thx for all the help!

I just recorded an MP3 off a video with no soundtrack available. I was also able to use the ATI video capture program to get a wallpaper I'd been wanting. This was stuff I've been wanting to try for a long time, but was always afraid I'd hurt my computer.
