I have Windows 98 and while on a website my computer froze. When I tried to reboot it would come up to the windows logo and then reboot again. Of course this time it went into safe mode. I attempted a reboot several times, then did a defrag which made no difference. The bootlog.txt was fine until it started loading fonts at which time I got a boatload of fonts failed to load, failure code 0016. I saw on another thread where someone had Symantec on their system and disabled it or something, but I don't have Symantec. I use AVG Antivirus.

Any ideas what I need to do?

    moonpie,

Fonts that fail to load can be caused by two reasons.

    1) You have fonts in many other folders other than the Fonts folder.

The Font Manager searches the hard disk for fonts. It may find several folders containing fonts. The Font Manager finds these fonts and records the information so that future attempts to locate a font proceed more quickly. These fonts should then stop appearing in the bootlog.

    2) You have a lot of fonts and Windows has a problem (error) loading a driver.

Windows is trying to load drivers and fonts at the same time into memory. But, is having problems. Hence, the way to fix this error is to remove all the listed fonts in the bootlog, create a new bootlog and fix the driver that is really causing the problem.

    Hope this helps,

ski...I appreciate your reply to my post, however I'm not quite sure how to do what you are suggesting. Got any directions for me? I thank you for your time.

    moonpie,

    1) Remove all the listed fonts that fail to load in your current bootlog.txt

    2) Create a new bootlog.txt

To force Windows to create a new Bootlog.txt:
    1. Hold down the F8 key, when Windows starts.
    2. When the START UP MENU appears, select option (2) Logged (Bootlog.txt). Press enter.
Your system will boot normally and will create a new Bootlog.txt file in your C:\ directory.
    3. Your previous Bootlog.txt will be renamed Bootlog.prv.
    4. You can use Word Pad to view the contents of Bootlog.txt

Thanks to you two for responding.

ski, I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing. The way I understand your post is to open the bootlog.txt and cut out the fonts that aren't loading, then reboot and create another bootlog.txt. If I'm misunderstanding, please let me know. I tried that and it didn't work. I was at a friends house when I posted and forgot that when my computer is booting up and gets to the Windows logo, it's not still rebooting all over again, but the message that it's Now Safe to Shut Down Your Computer is coming up.

Goddezz, I've looked over the links you gave me and have to admit my feeble brain is having trouble processing all the information. I've hooked up another computer that someone gave me and will have to get someone to print out the info so I can hook the bad one back up again and try to work on it. I'm wondering if this all isn't just beyond me and maybe I need to try to find a friend to work on it instead. Thanks so much for your response.

ski123's advice wasn't to edit the Bootlog.Txt. That is simply a log file created as windows starts up. As long as this feature is enabled, a log will be created each and every time, the old one being renamed to Bootlog.Prv in the process.
What I think he means is for you to look up each font that lists as FAILED in the log, and either delete it to the recycle bin, or copy them to another folder, preferably one you just made. They just cannot exist in the folder they are in.

Thanks Mark. I thought that might be it but was afraid to go moving or deleting things. I will try that.

I appreciate yall looking out for folks like me. I do pretty good with some stuff, but others I just don't have much knowledge about.
