I have downloaded some .vob files from my DVD cam and find I can not play them in WMP or WMC. In my Googling to try to find a solution I read that Media Player or Media Center should be able to see and play these files without any 3rd party DVD decoder if you are running Home Premium or Ultimate. I've got HP and I'm stumped. Any thoughts?

    From my generalised knowledge

You should have received software from the camcorder manufacturer to "download" and edit the files off the camera. You may need to investigate using that. If the software only covers Win XP, you may need to run it in XP compatibility mode. Check for information (and FAQs) at the camcorder manufacturer's website.

Some manufacturer's software can be more trouble than they're worth though, so I try to avoid them (maybe you are too :D).

Yeah, I've installed the Hitachi software - it's a video editing program and from what i can determine, pretty much worthless. I have no trouble d/l the movie files from my camcorder - Vista reads the cam like another drive and lets me copy the files onto my hard drive. It's just when I try to watch the movies media player or media center won't play them. Media Player tries to and just sits there, Media Center can't even see them.

Brett63 Here is a link to the VLC player I use. It plays everything. I don't use WMP at all. I have been using VLC for quite a while and am very satisfied with it......

BMoore - VCL player works great! Thanks for the tip. I especially like how it plugs into Firefox and works very seamlessly - far better than WMP.
