    Hello,

I have a Gateway MX6214 Intel Celeron M 1.60 GHz 504 MB of RAM with Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 laptop. The DVD player is a Philips DVD+-RW SDVD8820. I'm running the most recent version of Windows Media player.

I've had my laptop for several years and have used my DVD player to play and write DVD's up until today when I just tried to play a DVD. I received the following message:

Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.

I adjusted the Windows display settings but the message still appears. After doing some research on the web, I read to do the following, which I did:

In the Run box, I typed dvdupgrd /detect and got the following:

    No decoders found W2k Upgrade=no Win9x Upgrade=no LCID=0409

I then typed dvdupgrd /upgrade but nothing happened since there was no upgrade I guess.

I have searched for hours on the Internet for a fix, but I just keep coming to dead ends.

Could someone please help me with this issue? Is this problem a result of a Windows update? I create videos and need to complete one for a family member. I am still able to play music CD's if that helps.

    Thank you so much!

    Mary

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

A DVD drive can read/write (in your case) both CD's and DVD's for which 2 different laser circuits are used for the read/write operation so it is possible that the drive has failed.

The CD side would appear to be OK as you post that music CD's play OK - through Windows Media Player?

Test out the DVD side .....

Does the drive read a DVD of any sort - data, music, video? - the contents of the DVD should be shown in Windows Explorer. If the DVD contents are not shown in Windows Explorer the drive is not reading the disk and I would suspect that the DVD side has failed.

Windows updates are blamed for all sorts of computer ills - unjustly and I don't think that is the root cause of your problem.

Hi PeteC! Thanks for the information.

I am able to listen to CD's through the CD/DVD drive using the Windows Media Player.

I put a Carnival Cruise Lines DVD into the drive and it shows up as 'Carnival' under the 'E' drive under 'My Computer' but in WMP, it says 'unknown DVD', but has all of the chapters listed. It is somehow reading the title to be listed under the 'E' drive, so I'm wondering if it's a player issue of some sort.

I'm still getting the message that I might need to adjust my Windows display settings in the Control Panel.

I am still wondering if I need to download a decoder or encoder of some kind.

I typed the below message I got before (when I typed dvdupgrd /detect into the run field) into a search box on the Internet and it seems a lot of people are experiencing the same issue:

    No decoders found
    W2k Upgrade=no
    Win9x Upgrade=no
    LCID=0409

So, I'm still not sure I should replace the drive if there's something I can download off of the Internet. I really cannot afford to buy a new CD/DVD read/write drive right now.

    Thanks again for your help!

Hi mfinn. Download and install, K-Lite Codec Pack Standard.

You should be able to play DVD's after installing the codec pack.

    Thanks, Evan Omo!

I downloaded the K-Lite Codec Pack and I tried both DVD's that wouldn't play earlier and now they play in both the Windows Media Player and the Media Player Classic. Thank you very much!

The only thing I noticed is the sound is not very good. It sort of pops when the DVD's play. There were quite a few choices for the set up of the Pack and I wasn't sure which to check, so I chose some of the one's I recognized. I'm not sure if that's the reason for the decreased sound quality. Was that O.K., or should I go back, uninstall it and reinstall it? If so, are there certain boxes that should be checked?

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

    Thanks again!

The options on the codec pack won't affect your sound quality. Have you installed the latest drivers for your sound card?

If not then click Start< Run and type dxdiag and hit enter. Click the Sound tab and let me know what sound device you have installed.

Glad to hear that it was not a hardware issue - a little surprised that you did not have the necessary codecs already on board, but Evan put you onthe right path :)

Here is the link for your audio driver, Gateway MX6214 Audio driver.

The thing is though that the audio driver that I found was older than the one you have installed. Are you having any other sound issues or is it just when you insert a DVD that you get sound distortions?

    Thanks for the link!

No, only when I play DVD's. I don't have any sound issues with CD's or when I completed the sound tests.

    Thanks again!!

    Ok then.

Since you going to install the driver from the link that I provided make sure you uninstall your current audio driver first and then install the one from the link in my post.
